Va. Democrats blast proposed fetus 'personhood' bill

Posted to: News Politics State Government Virginia

Democrats staged a preemptive rhetorical strike Thursday against Republican legislation that they said seeks to outlaw abortion and might even put some forms of birth control in legal jeopardy.

Del. Bob Marshall's "personhood" bill, HB1 - the first piece of legislation introduced in the House this session - says that from the moment of conception, unborn children have "all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of this Commonwealth."

Del. Charniele Herring, D-Alexandria, called it "reckless and divisive" and "an abhorrent attack on women's rights."

State Sen. Donald McEachin, D-Richmond, said the Marshall bill is part of a broad assault on abortion rights by Republicans at the state and federal levels, noting that some GOP presidential contenders have expressed sympathy for such measures.

A similar bill from Marshall, R-Prince William County, was passed by the Republican-led House last year but died in a Democrat-controlled Senate committee.

McEachin warned that this year, with an effective 21-20 Republican majority in the Senate, the measure could be passed and sent to the desk of Gov. Bob McDonnell, also a Republican.

"It's important to get the word out to Virginians," he said.

Best Part

The best part of this bill would be the fact that any woman who would miscarry would then be charged with murder, or at the very least assisted suicide. But, miscarriage IS God's way of tell you that you aren't fit to be a mother, so prison time would probably be best anyway.

Another worm in the bucket

You may consider this facetious, but it could and probobly would happen: Under "personhood at conception", you would make a newly conceived blastoma, not even a fetus yet, entitled to all rights and protections of any US citizen. The current law provides that anyone BORN in the US is automatically a citizen. If the law is changed, that would make any one CONCEIVED in the US automatically a citizen. What would that do to visitors from other countries? Would they have to register whenever they had intercourse, and denied entry during the women's fertile period? You complain about "anchor babies" now, consider that women would not have to wait til birth to claim citizenship for a child, just a visit would do. Think about that. Then decide!

Isn't it odd...

how people that are pro-abortion survived child birth?

Isn't it Odd

Isn't it Odd that people who say such stupid things are pro-life? NOT.

Christians

Check out the Apostles’ Creed, which says of Jesus that “he shall come to judge the quick and the dead” or at least when I was growing up. Life was considered to begin when a pregnant woman could feel the movement of the fetus, i.e., it had "quickened" in that it moved. You were among the "quick" from that point until you died. They weren't stupid, and they knew that it took sex between a man and a woman to cause a pregnancy. They just didn't consider it life until the woman could feel movement. Been a while since I've gone to church so I guess it's possible the current version of the Apostles' Creed says "he shall come to judge the quick and the dead and any fertilized ova prior to their being felt by the woman.” But I doubt it.

Gotta wonder

Gotta wonder about people who are brave enough to kill our unborn, but not our enemies.

Not yours.

They are not "your" unborn. 'You' are not pregnant,'you' were not repeatedly raped by your step-father and then thrown out by your own mother.
It's not about "you"

Never resolved

This subject is so controversial it will never be settled to everyone's satisfaction. All we can do is to try to be civil about it, and quit condemning others for having a differing point of view. Argue the point, but avoid personal invective.

Birth Control

Without stringent birth control measures in China, there would be a population increase in that country of an estimated two billion in 2012.

When a pregnant woman - - -

Drinks – she should be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor
If the woman is in a bar or having diner and drinks – she be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and all others charged for not reporting the violation of the law.
Smokes – charged with child endangerment
Prenatal care – the pregnant women is not taking care of herself and is interned for the safety and protection of the child and forced to eat properly and exercise, etc...

How is the government going to protect this child? The government will have to be more aggressive and intrusive into her and her family’s life.

What about the doctor’s responsibility with reporting child abuse (drinking) and endangerment (smoking)?
