Virginia Tech lost a commitment for 2012 when four-star wide receiver Robert Lockhart of Boca Raton, Fla., announced via Twitter that he will be signing with Miami come February.
Lockhart tweeted: "Might lose some followers but, Just made it official and committed to the university of miami."
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound receiver originally signed with Virginia Tech last year but did not qualify and spent the year at Fork Union.
The Hokies have 26 players committed for 2012. Rivals has a list of the entire class.
On the injury/surgery front, head trainer Mike Goforth gave Frank Beamer's official website some injury updates. Here's the rundown, all courtesy of the site:
- OT Nick Acree had his right knee scoped to repair a small tear of his medial meniscus. He should be available for spring drills.
- WR D.J. Coles had his right PCL reconstructed. He'll be held out of spring practice but should be ready for the 2012 season.
- RB Tony Gregory had ACL reconstruction on his left knee. It's the second time he's an an ACL injury to that knee. He played the last four games with a torn ACL. He'll miss spring drills but Goforth thinks he'll be ready by fall.
- OL Michael Via had his left ACL reconstructed and his medial meniscus repaired. He played the entire year with a torn ACL, according to the site. He previously had his right ACL reconstructed. He'll sit out this spring but is expected to be ready by fall.
- The following players were cleared to participate in winter workouts: FB Justus Hoffman, DT Antoine Hopkins, WR Dyrell Roberts and OL David Wang.
- Linebackers Bruce Taylor and Jeron Gouveia-Winslow's winter workouts status is still to be determined.
