NORFOLK

A Portsmouth woman standing on the shoulder of Interstate 64 was hit by a vehicle about 1:30 p.m. Sunday and later died.

Charisse Turner was driving west on I-64 when she got a flat tire near the Northampton Boulevard exit, a news release from Virginia State Police said. She pulled off on the right shoulder, and a man pulled over in front of her car to offer help. After the two spoke, Turner walked back to her vehicle to get her purse and was hit by a 1992 Mercury that ran off the side of the road and sideswiped her car.

Turner, 40, of Portsmouth was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where she died of her injuries.

Jonathan Heuneman, 47, of Norfolk was charged with reckless driving. Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, police said.
