Bodie Island Lighthouse work set to resume

Posted to: News North Carolina

Restoration of the Bodie Island Lighthouse, an Outer Banks landmark, will resume after nearly a year, the National Park Service said Wednesday.

A $1.89 million contract was awarded to continue the project, which stopped last spring when expensive structural problems were discovered and there was not enough money to address them, the park service said. New funding requests have since been approved to complete the work.

The work is expected to begin in late February and finish in October. United Builders Group LLC, from New Bern, N.C., is the prime contractor.

The 156-foot lighthouse opened in 1872 near Oregon Inlet. The initial renovation work involved replacing parts of its spiral staircase, interior painting and the replacement of electrical equipment.
