Young lion leaving Virginia Zoo in Norfolk for Florida

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

A young, male African lion will be leaving the Virginia Zoo and heading to Orlando, Fla., to become part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Dakari is the last of his siblings to move to a new home. His brothers went to the Pittsburgh Zoo and his sister went to the Knoxville Zoo, a news release from the zoo in Norfolk said. The four cubs were born at the Norfolk zoo on May 2, 2009, to father Mramba and mother Zola.

The cubs have all been moved as part of a Species Survival Program, designed to help endangered species through a range of activities, which include cooperative breeding. Wild lions are considered to be a vulnerable species because of habitat loss and conflict with humans in sub-Saharan Africa, the news release said.

The 438-pound Dakari will leave for Florida on Thursday.
