A Senate panel on Tuesday advanced legislation to prohibit smoking in schoolyards and public buildings such as the legislative office tower in Richmond where some officials light up.
One of the bills from Sen. Ralph Northam, D-Norfolk would extend the existing ban on smoking inside schools to cover outdoor school property such as ball fields and playgrounds.
Northam said the legislation would discourage children from picking up the habit by preventing school personnel from puffing in their presence.
Similar legislation has already been snuffed out in the House of Delegates this year.
Northam said his other bill, SB468, would ban smoking in state government buildings, including legislative and judicial facilities, meaning it would apply to the General Assembly Building where some lawmakers still smoke.
It would also allow localities to adopt ordinances prohibiting smoking in their public buildings.
The House extinguished a similar bill Tuesday.
Both of Northam’s anti-smoking bills passed the Local Government Committee, a committee in the Republican-controlled Senate on which Democrats have a majority.

How?
How do the Dems have the majority of a Rep controlled Senate?
Enough is enough!
Smokers have been beat up and bashed over the head enough with rediculous taxes, and restrictive laws. We have more than enough laws on our books already in this "FREE'ST COUNTRY" in the world. This is just another attempt for politicians to get their name out there by cashing in on kissing the PC crowds collective a...s! Knock it off- ENOUGH IS ENOUGH- GO AWAY - JUST GO AWAY! Most Americans are getting fed up with your laws, rules and regulations.
on the other hand....
Some of us good, clean citizens support every anti-smoking bill that's proposed. Let's have some more clean air for those of us who want to avoid the stink and arrogance and filthiness of the smokers that seem to surround us.
Well then
Why not just ban it? Oh wait, that won't do because then all you "good, clean citizens" would have to make up all the lost tax revenue and pay for own kids' health insurance and you don't want to do that. hypocrites.
