Under one piece of legislation advancing through the General Assembly, a concealed-handgun permit would be good enough identification to allow a voter to cast a ballot.
Sen. Ralph Smith’s bill (SB663) adds gun permits to the list of acceptable forms of ID at the polls, along with driver’s licenses, voter registration cards and certain other documents.
The legislation from Smith, R-Roanoke County, was approved by a House of Delegates subcommittee this morning on a 3-2 vote. It has already passed the Senate.
Andrew Goddard, a gun-control activist who testified against the bill, called it “utter pandering.”
Other legislation that has passed both the Senate and House would require anyone without an accepted form of ID to vote a provisional ballot, which would not be counted unless and until the voter’s identity is verified.
Under current law, voters without ID are allowed to cast a regular ballot after signing a statement affirming their identity.

drinking beer and voting
I fail to understand why, at age 48, I am being asked much more frequently to produce an ID to buy a beer in a restaurant and yet, as a society, we have a problem with asking for one at a voting booth. Seems like a pretty easy fix to a percieved problem. Especially when one considers the accomadations that the state is willing to make to those that can't produce one
Well....
...what about my fishing license? It, too, is an official Virginia document. It even has my address and DOB.
Not a Valid ID...
Why is a Concealed Handgun Permit going to be considered valid ID for casting a ballot?
Currently, per the Code of Virginia, § 18.2-308 (http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?000+cod+18.2-308) “The person issued the permit shall have such permit on his person at all times during which he is carrying a concealed handgun and shall display the permit and a photo-identification issued by a government agency of the Commonwealth or by the United States Department of Defense or United States State Department (passport) upon demand by a law-enforcement officer.”
Emphasis added.
Silly liberals.....go waste
Silly liberals.....go waste someone else's time, adults are trying to work.
Object to Anything
It's gotten to the point that one party will object to the other party no matter the topic. A gun permit is an official Virginia identification, so why shouldn't it be used as ID for voting purposes?
Goddard needs to shake the sand from his ears and re-think his comments. Politicians tend to suffer the foot-in-mouth syndrome way too often.
Utter pandering?
So, the value of a document that requires a background check and is signed by the Clerk of the Court is discounted as utter pandering? I can prove who I am at the polls and I believe that anyone who can't provide reasonable documentation of who they are should not be allowed to vote.
question
To obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit I would assume you would need to produce a valid picture ID, either a drivers license or a passport. So whats the point of this legislation other than show the folks at the polls that you are packing.
more details - this is not pandering
Just to clarify, and I can only speak for Chesapeake's CCP Requirements: A State Police Criminal Background Check, You are fingerprinted, DMV issued ID, 5 yr residential history, proof of handgun safety course,or valid VA hunting license , or proof of service in the military, and a $50 fee.
Goddard is just a far left Progressive Democrat gun control advocate disparaging CCP holders as somehow vagrants, or on the fringe of the law abiding public.
