A 13-year-old boy will stand trial May 15 in connection with the shooting death of a girl last month in Deep Creek, a judge said Tuesday in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
During the hearing, Judge Eileen Olds also ordered that the boy remain in a juvenile detention center in Chesapeake for at least the next three weeks. A detention review hearing is March 13.
"It's good that he sit there," said Lisa Walker, whose 12-year-old daughter, Carolyn "Cee-Cee" Walker, was killed Jan. 10 outside the Owens Village housing complex.
She feared for the safety of the community and of the boy, noting that her daughter was well-liked and some people remained angry about her death.
The boy's attorney and parents left the courthouse without speaking to reporters.
According to witnesses, the boy was showing off a gun to friends when the shooting occurred. He pointed the gun at his own head and then at Carolyn's head. That's when the gun went off.
Police on Tuesday added a misdemeanor charge of possession of a firearm by a juvenile to his manslaughter charge.
