CHESAPEAKE
You owe it to yourself to take a vacation. You owe it to yourself to reconnect with family and friends.
You owe you.
Chesapeake is using the slogan - U.O.U. - to try to capture recreational visitors to the region. By some measures, it's working.
Last year, the city's hotel occupancy rates increased to 65 percent, up from 60.4 percent in 2010, according to Smith Travel Research.
Rates also rose in Norfolk and Virginia Beach to about 57.3 percent and 59.7 percent, respectively.
Chesapeake tourism officials know the city isn't necessarily a destination for a visitor - no beach, no amusement parks - but it is close to regional attractions offering such things.
"The angle Chesapeake is going with is: 'Come here, relax, go out on a short drive to Williamsburg or to the beach, then come back and relax here,' " said Chris Lowie, chair of the City Council-appointed Tourism Advisory Board.
Hotels in Greenbrier are generally cheaper than those at the Oceanfront, the area is less crowded in the summer, and easy highway access can take a traveler from Chesapeake to Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens or the Beach.
"All roads lead to Chesapeake," Lowie said.
Kim Murden, who as tourism director works under the city's Economic Development Department, said cities work together to promote what they offer.
"At the end of the day, visitors don't know where city lines change," Murden said. "Everybody in the region recognizes we all have something different to offer."
In Chesapeake, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge fits that definition.
About 70,000 people visit the Great Dismal Swamp a year, said Lowie, who is also the refuge manager. He said tourists make up "more than half" of the visitors. Many come for its bird population.
The city's tourism plan indicates the city should take advantage of kayaking to draw tourists. While the city does have kayak and canoe rentals at Northwest River Park and Chesapeake Campground on the George Washington Highway, the tourism plan cites the need to offer more options through a traditional vendor in more locations.
That is something the economic development department is trying to secure, Murden said.
The six-person Convention and Visitors Bureau, which has a $1.17 million budget this year, doesn't pay for national media advertisements to attract visitors. Instead, tourism officials route advertising through AAA to spread the word to those already planning a Hampton Roads vacation and through regional print publications, Murden said.
Lowie said bringing tourists to Chesapeake helps residents, too. In 2010, state and local tourism receipts provided enough to save each household $290.70 in taxes.
"Tourists get the short-term benefits," Lowie said, "but residents get the direct long-term benefit."

Chesapeake - 30 minutes to North Carolina
If one is a cyclist, Chesapeake has some great recreational riding trails, Great Dismal Swamp is great place to ride as long as its not burning. If you need something tamer, rent a beach cruiser on the VB board walk. Or go watch whales. Atlantic Ave / Rudee Inlet is only 30 or 40 minutes from Chesapeake city center. First Landing St Pk also 30 or 40 minutes and is a great ride from the Park all the way down Atlantic Avenue. If your cycle has a motor check out the seafood rest stops along 168. If shopping is your thing, Greenbrier is the best... new stuff, old stuff, lots of pizza and mex all the way down Battlefield to Great Bridge. Cycling also in city park and the lakes. Have fun.
what a joke...
Seriously all Chesapeake has to offer is the Great Dismal Swamp ??
A short drive to the beach? Really
Cheaper hotel? Maybe, but where are you going to eat. There is nothing but fast food joints in Greenbrier or greasy fried cat fish!! Yeepeee
Nice slogan but who the heck would want to stay there n vacation?
BTW, how's the big swimming pool idea coming along? I thought that was going to be THE tourist draw? Economic Development staff.....you dropped the ball on that one !! Nice work! What else have to done so creatively ??
still more....
As for places to eat – Shame on you for not knowing!! You should check-out Amber Lantern Restaurant, Baker's Crust, Bergey's Breadbasket Bakery & More, Carolina Cupcakery, Chesapeake Honey Glazed Ham Company, City Deli, Court House Café, Gotti's Grinders, Great Bridge BBQ, Passion The Restaurant, Plantation Cafe`, Royal Thai Cuisine, Terebinth, The Broken Egg Bistro, Wickers Crab Pot Seafood, Winston's Café, Wood Chicks BBQ…. YUMMY.
seriously
I guess you have never truly had good food. Although this is a big list, they are all 2 maybe 2.5 star restaurants. None of these are truly stellar places to eat.
Chesapeake is devoid of any place good!!
awww chesapeake is a hidden jem
Chesapeake has a lot more than the Great Dismal Swamp… like off the top of my head Bells Mill Park, Cahoon Plantation, Chesapeake Arboretum, Chesapeake City Park, Chesapeake Planetarium, Chesapeake Veterans' Memorial, Chilled Ponds Ice & Turf Sports Complex, Deep Creek Lock Park, Elizabeth River Boat Landing & Park, Fun Forest, Great Bridge Lock Park, Greenbrier Family Skating Center, Greenbrier Mall, Greenbrier Sports Park, Gum Tree Farm, Jillian's AND more….
Chesapeake is a short drive to the beach… 25 minutes. Its Short drive to Norfolk too making it a perfect place to stay when wanting to visit all of Hampton roads while visiting. The hotel prices are MUCH cheaper than those at the VA BCH oceanfront. (To be honest I don’t know how
coming to beach
If I am going to come to the beach, I am going to stay at the beach and not drive 25 minutes ( maybe at midnight) Seriously if a family is on vacation for a week, are any of the facilities you mentioned above worth my family vacation dollars? NO ! I guess you don't get out much as there is not a single park attraction worthy of coming to Chesapeake for.
The city has cut the parks budget I have been told by over 2 million dollars and they are facing more cuts. Obviously the city does give a hoot about how bad their public facilitates are. As far as the private ones goes? Most people have all of these facilities back home somewhere. They are not really an "attraction" like Williamsburg. The city had a shot with the pool but they blew that.

It is obvious from your reply you are an employee of the Travel and Tourism Dept. As much fun as it would be to answer why your examples are horribly wrong, I will try to be polite this morning. All of the city owned facilities you mentioned are so poorly maintained, they should be an embarrassment to the city. I will give the good folks at the Arboretum credit. They have worked hard to create that special place with little to no help from the city. City park ? A dump. Bells Mills = literally a dump!
There is not a single park in the city worth a hoot. Go look at Centerville. 5 million dollars and nothing but weeds. If it were not for the soccer group there would be no grass. If that is the best you can do this city is in trouble!
The drawing card for me to
The drawing card for me to come to Chesapeake Was Bergeys Dairy and the opportunity to pick strawberries.
