Churchland Y's sock hop a Valentine's hit

The Churchland Y hosted a family sock hop the Friday before Valentine’s Day. Staff and some of the guests dressed in their most colorful 1950s garb and enjoyed an evening that combined fitness and fun. A heart-themed craft table kept little hands busy. Staff member Jeanne Anderton led rousing dance workouts to golden oldies like “Be Bop a Lu,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Rock Around the Clock.” The bingo game was packed. ohnny Burris, 6, won the first two games, while Ashlyn Piland, Katie Hildebrand and Autumn Talley were in a three-way tie in a blackout round. Joe’s Good Food Fast was featured on the Hampton Roads Show on WAVY last week. Co-owner Terry Fraley dropped by the set on Valentine’s Day to make peppermint red velvet cupcakes. He walked co-host Chris Reckling and FM 99 DJ Rick Rumble through the recipe, which included using peppermint in both the batter and the cream cheese frosting. Afterward, the guys topped off their creations with an assortment of caramel, fruit, coconut and chocolate toppings. The trio had the kind of fun that only three men in a kitchen could cook up. Terry brought in a few of Joe’s well known plates: marble and coconut cakes, she-crab soup, bread pudding and their famous chicken salad. Joe’s is across from Maryview hospital at 3603 High St. Visit www.wavy.com for the cupcake recipe.

Sharon Knowles was the guest speaker for the Sterling Point Garden Club two weeks ago. The past Elizabeth River Gardens Club president gave a primer on worms – which may not sound like an interesting topic, but really made an impression on the audience. The Olde Towne resident has used worms to produce her own garden soil for three years. After reading “The Earth Moves” by Amy Stewart and meeting the author at a horticulture show, Sharon purchased a worm bin online and began her journey. She’s now an expert of sorts on vermiculture. Some worm trivia you may not know: worms do not overpopulate, but reproduce in accordance with their food supply. Also, the red wiggler worms that turn your compost pile into dirt shouldn’t be used in the garden. Google vermiculture or worm bins if you’re interested in making your own soil.

The Sweetheart Breakfast for the Cure at Centenary United Methodist Church on Feb. 13 served multiple purposes. It was a hearty meal for those headed to their Monday morning workday, a fundraiser for ill children, and a chance to obtain a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift. We Kater 2you prepared and served the menu. A portion of the proceeds went to St. Jude Children’s Research hospital. Door prizes and a small gift booth allowed some to walk away with presents for loved ones. More than 100 stopped by for the 6 a.m.-9 a.m. event. We Kater 2you is owned by Jermaine Potts of Brandon Square. Reach Jermaine at 484-8548.
