PORTSMOUTH

The Coast Guard is warning mariners about gale-force winds that are forecast for the mid-Atlantic region.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple warnings for Sunday and Monday. Winds are expected to be in excess of 40 knots and with waves reaching up to 22 feet in height. The Coast Guard is advising mariners who are not experienced in those conditions to stay in port.

An HC-130 Hercules crew is to fly along the East Coast on today making urgent marine information broadcasts about the expected weather.

The Coast Guard is urging mariners to frequently check weather conditions, wear life jackets while they're on the water and to file a float plan with friends, family members and their local marina before heading out.
