Here’s a look at area basketball players who are playing on nationally-ranked teams.

Men

#5 Duke – Andre Dawkins (Atlantic Shores) averaging 9.4 points, 2.1 rebounds

#7 North Carolina – James Michael McAdoo (Norfolk Christian) averaging 5.1 points, 3.6 rebounds

#10 Marquette – Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) averaging 9.8 points (3rd on team), 5.4 rebounds (2nd on team)

#25 Virginia – Mike Scott (Deep Creek) leads his team in points (17.3), rebounds (8.2)

#31 Harvard – Keith Wright (Norfolk Collegiate) tied for lead in points (10.7) and leads in rebounding (8.2). Also has 41 blocks

#36 Virginia Commonwealth – Darius Theus (Norcom) leads team in assists (4.0). Also, 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and second in steals with 47. Briante Weber (Great Bridge) leads team in steals with 63 and is averaging 5.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

Women

#6 Maryland – Kim Rodgers (Princess Anne) is averaging 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds

#7 Duke – Elizabeth Williams (Princess Anne) leads the team in scoring (14.3) and rebounds (8.3). She’s also nationally ranked in blocked shots with 98.

#15 Georgetown – Sugar Rodgers (King’s Fork) leads team in scoring (19.3). She also averages 5.3 rebounds and has 61 steals.

#26 West Virginia – Linda Stepney (Lake Taylor) is averaging 4.6 points and has 73 assists and 23 steals. Crystal Leary (Lake Taylor) is averaging 3.3 points and 3.7 rebounds

Others

Campbell freshman Trey Freeman (Kellam) made 35 consecutive free throws to set a school record. On the season Campbell leads all Big South freshmen in scoring (14.4), field goal % (.451), free throw % (.877) and assists (3.96). He has made 38 of his last 39 foul shots (.974).

Virginia State junior Mike Bynum (Indian River) had a good past week. He had 14 points, four assists and four rebounds to help Trojans upset No. 19 Bowie State. He also had 18 points and shot 60 percent from the field in a win over Lincoln.

Baseball 

Charlotte freshman Leland Clemmons (Portsmouth Christian) made the most of his first collegiate hit when he belted a home run to left center in a win over St. Peter’s last week. It was just his third at-bat of the season. He also added another hit and RBI.
