Efforts under way for Va. slavery museum

Posted to: News Virginia

RICHMOND

A Richmond group that aims to recognize slavery's historic impact wants to establish a national slavery museum in the city's historic Shockoe Bottom district.

The Richmond City Council Slave Trail Commission is seeking public input on the proposed United States National Slavery Museum. The project would be a living heritage site that would include an African-American Genealogy Center and include historic sites on the city's existing Slave Trail.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/AaR1BZ ) that project consultant Joy Bailey said the museum plans to use existing buildings instead of new construction. She spoke at a weekend meeting at which people were asked, among other things, whether they'd support such an effort.

Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder unsuccessfully tried to develop a slavery museum with the same name in Fredericksburg.

Great Idea

This museum is a great idea. It would present a significant portion of American history, including the evolution of our society. That evolution would include Virginia's transition from the center of slavery to electing our nation's first black governor ... to supporting the election of our nation's first black president. That's a great story pertaining to our evolution of humanity.

just a thought

Just a thought...if this museum wants to use the same name as the former museum group/idea, it needs to be TOTALLY transparent as to who is on the board, who is backing this, etc. Don't get me wrong, I am not against the slavery museum, I am just trying to point out that the fiasco involving Wilder will make people shy away from donations, and if you want to succeed, be transparent with your operations. History teaches us to learn from the past...

Past

Reponse to fresco biscuit
Why is that we can celebrate as a nation every aspect of American history, examples the civil war and the confedarates and living in Virginia u can't get away from the confedarate flag.
It's celebrated and reinacted, also history that didn't happen in American, the holocaust , but as soon as it comes to the history of slavery in this country some of us black and white always say lets move on and forget about the past.

blacks only want to get past

blacks only want to get past it when it is convenient for them. It happened, it isn't going to change.

museum

From whats been made available in the media, this seems to be a very mismanaged project from the very start. If its completeion is going to
depend on donations from the private sector, it may as well return the artifacts and start over again.

Past

I wish we could make up our mind what we really want for the future. Dredging up the past or getting over it and moving on. I guess whatever makes a buck wins out every time.

Should all museums be done

Should all museums be done away with then? Just the ones that deal with negative eras in history?

Wilder must need some more

Wilder must need some more money.
