More local football players headed to college

Princess Anne quarterback Brian Morgan committed to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday.

Morgan, who was ranked the No. 25 prospect by The Virginian-Pilot, said he visited the school over the weekend.

“I went to the campus and love it,” said Morgan, 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds. “I also liked the coaching staff. It just seemed like a good fit.”

Morgan had several offers, including an invite to James Madison University but chose CNU.

Morgan threw for 641 yards and four touchdowns with five interceptions for the Cavaliers who finished 0-10.

“I appreciate the coaches who took a chance on me even though my season didn’t go well,” he said.

Also headed to CNU are Booker T. Washington's Andrew Bassette, Atlantic Shores' Samuel Meade and Isle of Wight’s Ben Epps.

Bassette, 6-2 and 280 pounds played line for the Bookers. Meade was named to the VISAA Division 3 All-State as a kick returner. Epps, who played quarterback, chose CNU over interest from Northwestern Iowa, Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon.

Another signee for Alderson-Broaddus

Lake Taylor’s Doug Wesson is the latest player to sign with Alderson-Broaddus.

Wesson, 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, was first-team All-Eastern District at defensive utility player.

He played outside linebacker, inside linebacker and defensive tackle for the Eastern District champions.

That now brings the number to seven players who have signed with Alderson-Broaddus, a Division II program in Phillipi, W.Va., that begins play in 2012.

The others are Booker T. Washington’s Jerran Downing, Bishop Sullivan’s Brandte McIntyre, Ocean Lakes’ Athan Reynoso and Salem’s Josh Lawson Jeffrey Stephens and D’Andre Nicholson.

Others going to college

Nansemond-Suffolk’s A.J. Hicks will play at Averett University.

Maury’s Eric Johnson will walk on at Virginia Military Institute. Johnson, 5-8 and 175 pounds, played running back and linebacker for the Commodores last season.

And Former Maury All-Tidewater player Darryl Waters has decided not to attend Akron University. Waters, who played at Hargrave Military last season, will instead play at Lamar University in Texas.
