Friday roundup: Foul shots help Great Bridge hold on

Great Bridge 48, Western Branch 45

Marcus Evans made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to give Great Bridge (18-3, 15-2) a three-point lead and the No. 2 Wildcats held on to beat the Bruins on Friday night.

Desmond Johnson’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Evans finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Taj Owens led all scorers with 18 points and Byron Williams grabbed 10 rebounds for Great Bridge.

Norcom 51, Lake Taylor 45

Devin Patterson surpassed the 1,000-point mark in his career and scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half to lead the No. 8 Greyhounds past the No. 9 Titans.

Troy Locke scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half for Norcom (12-8, 9-4).

Treyvond Lockhart had 15 points for Lake Taylor (13-7, 7-6).

Nansemond River 61, Oscar Smith 55

Shannon Evans scored a game-high 22 points and the No. 7 Warriors (17-4, 15-3) quickly overcame a two-point halftime deficit with a 20-10 run in the third quarter.

Mike Copeland added 12 points and 10 boards for Nansemond River.

Kempsville 58, Cox 56

Jaquan Morton scored 22 points, delivered 10 assists and had seven steals for the Chiefs, who squandered a 10-point halftime lead and needed overtime to edge the Falcons.

Kempsville led 27-17 at the break and the teams were tied at 47 after regulation.

Maury 69, Churchland 57

Mike Basnight scored 16 points in the second half to help the No. 4 Commodores (14-5, 9-4) pull away from the Truckers.

Basnight (22), Charles Staton (15), Jaleel Ferguson (14) and Jamal Ferguson (12) combined for 63 of Maury’s 69 points. Jaleel Ferguson added 12 rebounds.

Granby 69, Booker T. Washington 62

Kareem Thompson and Aaron Johnson scored 18 points apiece for the Comets (15-6, 8-5).

Granby used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to pull away.

Thompson added 13 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Girls basketball

Salem 53, Landstown 42

Tyshara Fleming scored 11 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to pace the top-ranked SunDevils (21-0, 9-0) in a win over the No. 7 Eagles.

Salem’s Shaleise Boyd chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Lake Taylor 67, Norcom 33

Feyonda Fitzgerald recorded 17 points, 11 steals, nine rebounds and nine assists as the No. 4 Titans (16-3, 13-0) cruised.

The Titans’ Ariel Wilson added a game-high 24 points, 11 steals and seven rebounds.

Wilson 48, Norview 40

Kalilah Ali led the 10th-ranked Presidents (17-4, 10-3) with 14 points, 13 blocks and 11 rebounds in a win over the Pilots.

Maury 51, Churchland 28

Gianna Smith had 22 points and five rebounds and Chanette Hicks added 11 points and four steals to pace the No. 9 Commodores (16-5, 10-3).

Western Branch 55, Great Bridge 29

Dalishia Griffin recorded her 18th double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, Shanese Harris had 14 points and Alexis McKay added 11 points in an easy night for the No. 8 Bruins (13-8, 13-4).
