Ghent grocery store closes after man's clothing catches fire

NORFOLK

An elderly man was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon after he accidentally caught his clothes on fire in the restroom of a Ghent grocery store.

An employee at the Farm Fresh at 730 W. 21st St. called 911 about the man around 2:15 p.m., according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Harry Worley.

Worley did not know the extent of the man’s injuries but said he had burns. No other injuries were reported.

Because food was subject to smoke, the store will be closed until the Health Department can inspect it, Worley said.

Fire investigators are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
