Girls hoops: Don't count Princess Anne out

Posted to: High Schools Sports

When Princess Anne's 141-game Beach District winning streak ended with a 56-55 loss to Salem last month, some might have seen it as a sign that a dynasty was falling.

Or was it?

The defending Group AAA champion Cavaliers have since won 10 straight games in dominating fashion.

"It all depends on how you want to look at it," Princess Anne coach Darnell Dozier said. "A loss can be a good thing when you have a very young team that's trying to accomplish the same things the previous team did.

"When you lose as many players as we did, including the best player in the country (Elizabeth Williams, now at Duke), there's a learning curve."

Dozier said he immediately noticed a significant change in his players after the loss.

"That very first day (Galaisha) Goodhope took over and started showing that senior leadership we had been looking for," Dozier said.

"For us to bounce back to where we are is an accomplishment for this young team," Dozier said. "We're peaking at the right time and really looking good.

"So maybe losing that game doesn't hurt."

SCORING MILESTONES

Three area players reached 1,000 career points last week.

Western Branch junior Da'Lishia Griffin became the second Bruin this season to top the mark, scoring 23 points in a Southeastern District quarterfinal against Deep Creek. Teammate Shanese Harris scored her 1,000th point in the Bruins' second game of the season.

Cape Henry senior Virginia Hassell surpassed 1,000 in a victory over Walsingham.

Deep Creek senior Krista Moss notched her milestone during a 54-52 loss to Grassfield.

IT'S A GREAT START

Bayside's Takerra Parsons, a freshman, started her high school career in fine fashion as South Hampton Roads' 2011-12 regular-season scoring champion.

Parsons finished the season with 402 points in 21 games for a 19.1 average - 2.9 points better than her nearest competitor.

WOW Takerra Parsons 19.1

WOW Takerra Parsons 19.1 points a game as a freshman thats unheard of. I did some research and found out her team finished their season 6-13. To be the 2011-2012 Regular Season Scoreing Champion on a losing team is a great accomplishment. I cant wait to follow her career she is gonna be an awsome player to watch.
