An international insurance executive will talk about the impact of climate change and rising sea levels on the insurance industry later this month during a symposium at Old Dominion University.
Lindene Patton, chief climate product officer for Zurich Financial, will lead the symposium at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the Ted Constant Convocation Center’s Big Blue Room, according to a university news release. The event is free and open to the public.
The talk is sponsored by ODUs Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative and the College of Business and Public Administration.
Patton will discuss climate change and sea level rise issues facing insurance companies and their customers. In similar lectures, Patton has talked about her company’s efforts to manage climate change risks and help customers be prepared for climate change.
She serves on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Financial Advisory Board.
The ODU climate initiative was started, the release says, “to apply university resources to challenges predicted to come from sea level rise in urban coastal environments such as Hampton Roads.”

The bigger threat.
Actually, the bigger threat is world population. Too many people trying to sustain a modern post industrial lifestyle. Not enough resources, too many energy needs. Unstable climate only exacerbates the situation. This is what we face in the next fifty to one hundred years. Won't effect you, but it will effect our children and grandchildren. It's time to get our heads out our hind areas and educate ourselves. The sun will shine and the rains will come and go...but somethings won't last forever.
bottom line
One way or the other warming...cooling...does not matter. Is not going to change ...nothing can or will be done about it.....maybe some half hearted attempts...but not much else....school is dismissed...:)Hampton Roads can not run a transportation system....the world can not stop war in Syria....but global planetary eco-system control, manipulation and management.....NO PROBLEM....LOL
want to buy a battleship by the way?.....
...nothing can or will be done about it
Regardless who you believe I think you hit the nail on the head.
If particles of pollution were completely eliminated from the air, it would allow more sun and warmer temps. Remember how cold it got when Mt St. Helen erupted? They proved this theory when the world temperature rose by 1 degree when the planes stopped flying and polluting the air during 9/11.
you brought up a great point
Those in this debate for the politics are blind to the world we live in sometimes...It is interesting how "science" becomes politics does it not? In the past the earth was the center of the universe...those who did not believe were heritics...in the 60's global cooling was the in vogue thought and the "correct" thought was just that. My company did some consulting on the EU carbon capture scheme in the North Sea ..(pumping CO2 into oil wells) that has been cancelled as of this point....You would laugh and shake your head in disbelief of the things going on behind the scenes in politics and the science of this project...That is a story you will not see anytime soon. It is good the project went the way of the carbon stock exchange in the US.
Someone from the insurance
Someone from the insurance industry giving a talk on climate change is entirely appropriate, considering that it is a established fact that the number of natural disasters in the US having hydrological, climatological, and meteorological origins has significantly spiked since 1980.
Those numbers come from the INSURANCE industry, specially Munich RE.
Does anyone really think that the insurance industry, which has a very obvious financial stake in the issue, is not at all worried about climate change? Let's get real.
Money talks.
Realists
who depend on planning for the future (like the insurance industry and the military) know that global warming is real and are already making arrangements to mitigate as well as deal with its consequences. Others are just in denial.
Will Ken Cuccinelli and his GOPT cohorts...
... be there to protest with their guns at the ready and their 'water the tree of liburdy' posters?
ok...got it..part of the real story.....
"Zurich Financial Services says it is processing four submissions from companies for carbon capture and storage insurance cover.
According to Reuters, the Swiss insurer's chief climate product officer Lindene Patton said that companies in Europe, United States, Australia, China and Japan were also expressing interest in the coverage. Declined to name the companies involved and said it was too early to reveal the cost of any potential policies."

P.S. in Europe and pretty mcuh worldwide carbon capture scheme has been debunked as a hair-brained climate --sci-fi dream. But I am sure we will have many "global warming" insurance schemes to follow soon.
ya kidding me right? an attorney pushing global warming...
No now we have a lawyer pushing new insurance products...lecturing about climate change at Old Dominion university. Maybe I can get my auto repair guy to join in on the lecture to add some further credibility to the "science" LOL....Then we can adjourn to some further discussion by Norfolks Riddick for some tax law advice for April. If it was not so sad it would be funny.
There is no need to "push"
There is no need to "push" global warming. The evidence for global warming is quite obvious, even to former skeptics funded with money from the Koch brothers, whose Kansas corporation ranks among the most egregious polluters.
