Jackie Robinson - Norfolk Oct. 11, 1953

Approximately 3,700 Hampton Roads baseball fans witnessed Jackie Robinson and his all star team defeat the Philadelphia stars (11-3) in an exhibition game held at Norfolk’s Myers Field.

There were two home runs in the game – one by Robinson and the other by Johnny Glenn (Glenn played for the Piedmont League Newport News Dodgers ).

Below, Robinson signs autographs for young fans and in the last two shots Robinson poses with Luke Easter.

Soooooooooo, where in Norfolk was Myers field?

Myers field

Here's a link to a post on the Norfolk Tars where we mentioned the location lf Myers Field. It was off Church Street. The Tars baseball team was formed in Norfolk in 1896 and played their last game in 1955. In 1934, Jacob Ruppert, owner of the New York Yankees, reorganized the Tars as a farm team for the Yankees. The Tars played at several fields during their time here - League Park, Bain Field and High Rock Park. High Rock Park was later renamed Myers Field in honor of Eddie Myers, and was also known as Tar Park.
