Light rail will not run through downtown this weekend so crews can install a track switch that will give Hampton Roads Transit greater flexibility in managing train movements.
Buses will travel every 15 minutes between the Harbor Park and the EVMC/Fort Norfolk stations on Saturday and Sunday, following The Tide's route.
"We'll get people exactly where they want to go," said Jim Price, HRT's chief operations officer.
Normal weekend rail service will be provided between the Harbor Park and Newtown Road stations.
The service disruption is necessary so a track switch can be installed between the York Street/Freemason station and Botetourt Street. Work will begin after midnight Friday and will continue through Sunday evening.
Normal service will resume Monday morning.
The switch, which allows trains to move between the eastbound and westbound tracks, was part of the original design but was removed to save money, Price said. When it was added back before light rail opened, the contractor had already finished installing the tracks.
Price said it was cheaper to install the switch later, at a cost of $130,000, than to reopen the construction contract.
"We've been waiting for the right time to install it," Price said. "If we have a light time of year, it's now, in the middle of winter."
Light-rail trains currently must run the full route between Harbor Park and Fort Norfolk because there's no mechanism between those stations for switching tracks.
The switching device will allow HRT to turn a westbound train back to the east at York Street. Price said that is helpful for large downtown events, such as the holiday parade, when extra trains are needed downtown. If the switch had been in place a couple weeks ago when a train derailed near the Fort Norfolk station, Price said, HRT could have continued to run trains through downtown to York Street instead of using buses.
Work should wrap up Sunday, but Price warned there's a slim chance it could resume the following weekend.

What's the problem here ?
Seriously, are you guys jealous that you are not located near a station, are you VB residents, are you trolling? The light rail is here and it's sleek, convenient, and fast. The article is only stating that they are making improvements to make it EVEN MORE convenient. the comments calling it a choo-choo and asking for heads to roll on this are rediculously childish. Chill out guys, it's just a little progress I'm sure we'll be taking a giant leap backwards soon.
some of us....
Some of us live in Virginia Beach and work in Norfolk. Keep it in Norfolk. If we want to use it, we'll pick it up at Newtown Road.

Get Rid of Light Rail
I'm tired of reading all of these articles about how awful the light rail is. We need to get rid of this thing before it costs us out of house and home!!!
What is the cost to you for light rail?
Do you really know?
heads up
We pay for the light rail in taxes.
Duh!
What is you share?
That's a shame.
Heck, this could disrupt up to six or eight riders' schedules.
is it true that norfolk is going to put a few buses on either
side of the construction area so riders can just climb into the bus and drive themselves to the other side when they want? I heard Norfolk was going to to do that in keeping with the concept of not really requiring people to buy tickets and what not on the choo choo. Grin.... Sounds like Norfolk would not have to dedicate to many buses for this purpose. Least they saving money on drivers.
Hey VB, do you really want to be a partner with this choo choo as it is now? You know, things removed to cut costs, then put back anyways knowing it would happen? Can anyone really trust the real cost of this choo choo?
Trust me, I'm from the Government and I am here to help, yea right.
Nope
We don't want to be a partner with it in Virginia Beach.
