NORFOLK | Rafael Colon's run-scoring single in the bottom of the 14th inning Friday ended the longest game in Norfolk State history, giving the Spartans a 1-0 victory over Rider in their season opener at Marty L. Miller Field.
The Broncs won Game 2 of the doubleheader 5-3.
Starter Jordan Egan (Princess Anne High) and Justin Bhatti each pitched seven shutout innings in the opener.
Colon and Cameron Day (Landstown), who scored the winning run, each had two hits for NSU in Game 1.
Trailing 2-0 in Game 2, the Broncs scored five runs in the fifth. Colon and Ryan Montgomery each had a hit and an RBI for the Spartans.
The teams meet for another doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

NSU men extend lead
LANDOVER, Md. | The Norfolk State men scored 31.5 points to extend their lead after two days of the MEAC indoor track meet. The Spartans have 67.5 points. Maryland-Eastern Shore is second with 42.5 points.
On the women's side, Hampton (84.5 points) leads UMES (46).
WRESTLING
Monarchs fall in CAA
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. | No. 23 Old Dominion recorded just three victories in a 29-9 CAA loss at No. 19 Binghamton.
Scott Festejo (133 pounds), Justin LaValle (141) and Joe Budi (197) earned victories for the Monarchs (13-9, 3-3), who close the regular season Sunday at Virginia.

ODU hires assistant
NORFOLK | Bradley Watkins, a volunteer assistant with the Old Dominion football program the past two seasons, has been hired as the team's full-time running backs coach, head coach Bobby Wilder announced.
