Marlins to talk to star Cuban outfielder
Posted to: Fantasy baseball
It appears the Miami Marlins will get the first crack at signing Cuban star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Cespedes has been cleared to travel from the Dominican Republic to the United States and is likely to meet with the Marlins on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.
Cespedes, 26, declared a free agent last month, will probably meet with other teams as well. The Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles are among the other teams which have also reportedly coveted his services. But a source told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the Marlins are likely to sign him.
Regarded as a five-tool player with speed and power, Cespedes can play all three outfield positions. Last season, he hit .333 with 33 home runs, 99 RBIs, 89 runs and 11 stolen bases in 90 games in Cuba. He led his league in RBIs and runs and tied for the lead in homers.
