CHESAPEAKE
No one was injured when the teenage son of a Chesapeake police officer accidentally fired his father's weapon inside their home Saturday, according to department spokeswoman Kelly O'Sullivan.
The officer, whose name is not being released, reported the incident at 1:40 a.m. the following morning, O'Sullivan said. Police would not say whether anyone else was home when the shooting took place or comment on how the teen got the weapon.
The internal affairs unit is investigating the incident, which took place in the 800 block of Hywood Court, and no criminal charges have been placed against the teen, O'Sullivan said.
"Our officers are properly trained how to safeguard their weapons," O'Sullivan said.

Oh, he had a badge...well it must be okay then.
If the father had any other occupation at all, he would be universally criticized for being irresponsible by allowing a loaded weapon to be accessible to a child. But since he wears a uniform and badge, then he's above reproach, with nonsensical 'excuses' being made "he's trained...the kid had enough sense...blah blah blah."
It's quite understandable why the any identifiable information about this person will not be disclosed. What police force would want to admit to having someone so irresponsible on their payroll?
It's OK, folks. It was a
It's OK, folks. It was a police officer's weapon and he was trained. His son had the good sense to do his traget practice (it was practice) in the middle of the night when only thugs were out and about. Heck, he probably saved a couple of dozen people by just standing around with the gun. This kid, his dad and all you fine people are great Americans. You should all get medals for your patriotism and support for gun safety exercises such as this incident.
Hooterville
Where would want swat guys to store their special weapons? They are issured special weapons, and have to respond quickly if they are on the swat team. A trunk is locked, your house is locked. People can break into anything with a lock on it.
not swat
no S.W.A.T. was mentioned. Not a pistol, not a revolver and not a rifle or shotgun. It was a weapon.... Not much information!
All weapons should always be secured
Swat or not, all weapons should always be secured. With modern day gun safes, like one that I own, I can get to my loaded AR in a matter of seconds. Any loaded firearm, that can be accessed by others, such as children or teens, shows a total lack of brains and responsibility, by the owner cop or not. Those who choose not to secure thier weapons properly are the very people that give a bad image to other, responsible gun owners.
Funny
If you think a safe is needed to secure M4s and all of the other weapons ONE officer is issued then take it to City Council and be ready to PONY UP some more of YOUR tax dollars to fund the department/city to purchase a gun safe for each and every officer on the dept. I hope you make plenty of money because its going to take plenty to make this happen! The officer did nothing wrong but his teen son did. Just like you can't stop a teen from drinking/smoking/cussing/ ect you can't stop them from doing other things like messing with a gun they are educated to not mess with. Place blame where it should be and NO the officers name should NOT be blasted in the news. He did NOTHING wrong.
The most dangerous firearm
The most dangerous firearm is the one you think is unloaded. Never point it at anything you don't intend to destroy, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to use it, and always treat it as if it is loaded. The loudest noise in the world is a bang when you expected a click. The second is a click when you expected a bang.
what o'sullivan said?
“Our officers are properly trained how to safeguard their weapons” Well now... that training didn't sink in too much did it? This is the same reckless gun ownership that results in other kids getting killed. If he's that reckless about something as simple as responsible gun ownership what else is he reckless about?
If you own a gun
If you own a gun, you or a member of your family is seven times more likely to die of a gun death.
If you have a heart.
You Chris or someone in your family are more likely to die of a heart attack! Go fight with the greasy food makers. Don't exercise, sit on your butt all day and cut and paste. What really happened in your life to make you so disliking of guns? How about an anti butter knife or ball point pen crusade?
