Darrius Jones turned down a football scholarship offer from the University of Richmond, so the Norview senior was not among the dozens of area high school football players who last week signed national letters of intent. But Jones, a standout wide receiver and defensive back, didn't opt for another football program.
He's headed to New York City and the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker.
Jones verbally committed to Richmond in July but changed his mind in November.
"As I told the Richmond coaches, I can't sign this paper and tell them that I'm going to do something for them and my heart is not totally into it," Jones said. "I wouldn't be doing them justice. I could possibly be wasting their time when they could have somebody else who wanted to play."
Jones' decision took many by surprise - including his mother, Patrice. She was so upset she took a week off from work to try to understand her son's decision. A single parent after her husband, Eric, died when Darrius was 8, Patrice also has two other sons, Sheridan, 11, and Kennedy, 9.
The scholarship to Richmond would have paid for Jones' education. Now, the family faces more than $40,000 for tuition and housing each school year.
"It was a tough time," Patrice said. "I really had to get myself together because I was making myself sick just thinking about how life would be with student loans."
But, she said, she realized it was important to support her son and not "kill his dreams."
Jones knows he could have easily agreed to attend Richmond, which has a film studies program. But he also knew that NYU is one of the best film schools in the country.
Zohn Burden, the Richmond assistant coach who recruited Jones, said he's had athletes turn down scholarship offers to attend another college. But no athlete has turned down a full ride to pay to attend another school.
"That's a first," Burden said with a chuckle. "The thing was, he wasn't even accepted into (NYU) yet. So it was more like, 'I'm going to get accepted and this is what I'm going to do.'"
Burden knew there was no changing Jones' mind.
"When he told me I was in disbelief," said Burden, who has since joined Old Dominion's coaching staff. "You could see in his eyes that this was his dream and his goal and he was going to follow his dream."
Norview coach Greg Gibson also was surprised, but supportive.
"When I talked to him, I was really impressed with his maturity level," Gibson said. "For him to say this is what I want to do and football is not in the plan, I think it takes a lot of courage for a young man to understand what he really wants to do in his life. I'm proud of him to make that decision."
Jones said he loves football and has enjoyed all the excitement that's come with it. But he said football, even on its best day, couldn't fulfill him like directing.
Jones began dabbling in the arts as a child, and filmmaking became a passion after attending James Madison University's Male Academy - a motivational summer camp - before his freshman year.
Now, he's a prolific writer of screenplays and poetry, and he's written and produced a short film called, "Hi&Bye."
Jones was accepted to NYU after submitting an essay and 5-minute film.
The Joneses have reached out to others, including director Spike Lee, in an effort to find scholarship money. They haven't heard back, but they've been busy filling out scholarship application forms.
Jones knows it's a leap of faith to attend NYU, but thinks it's worth the risk.
"To me, it seems like the right choice," he said. "I've had some good times in football, but they don't even measure to how I feel when I write a play or direct. It's a totally different vibe and it's what keeps me going."

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE & SUPPORT
This is a wonderful story and we appreciate all of the words of encouragement and support. Darrius is a very intelligent young man. He has maintained a GPA of 3.5 while working and playing sports. He has gotten college credits already for Calculus I, College Chemistry, and is currently in Calculus II. He did extensive research and weighed his options. He understands that football would've been a means for a free education, but he also understands the dedication it will take to work in a lab on film assignments. Schools that were researched offered a film studies program which wasn't the same as what is offered at NYU. He wants the BEST, deserves the BEST, and we are going to try OUR BEST to make his dream a reality. WE LOVE HIM!
Cost Effective
It is a great opportunity to attend NYU for film school, but in today's economic climate we must think of the cost. If Richmond had offered him a FULL scholarship and they also have a film/broadcasting major why not take advantage of that. NYU can always be a choice for graduate school. If he researched Spike Lee he would know that he went to Morehouse College first and then attended NYU. I am not a dream crusher becuase I definitely got where I am today by taking risks and dreaming big. I just wish I could have talked to this young man and we could have sit down and did a cost benefit analysis of the possible choices. Congrats and take advantage of everything NYC and NYU has to offer.
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK NO ONE DID
I'm sure there were more than one person who sat down with Jones and went over the details with him. This is just what the young man wanted to do. He has received scholarships from what I've been told.
Hats off to Darrius Jones
What a wonderful story to read this morning. Come on Hampton Roads let's rally around this young man and help him. I've emailed the reporter of this story to find out how I can donate to Darrius college fund. We can do this!
FAITH IN YOURSELF MR DARIUS JONES
Knowing the type of athlete and receiver Jones is, this is a shock to most people however, only successful people have the courage to believe in themselves and step out on that belief and faith. This is the best article in the sports section this year. The one about the boys not going to college because of grades was a true but sad commentary. People around them let them fail and they failed themselves at this point. Luckily they are young enough to recover.
Mr. Darius Jones you have my utmost respect young brother to have the tenacity and audacity to pursue your dreams and not someone else's. I will look for your name on the big screen. Fly high and never come down! You are a person young people can look up to and say he did it his way!
A true inspiration!
Awesome article!! This is an amazing lesson of courage, from a young man committed to PURSUING PASSION! Many people did not pursue their passion at his age and are now very unhappy adults.
Is there a scholarship fund established to accept donations and help cover tuition costs?
Thanks Virginian-Pilot for this article! God-speed Darrius!
Thanks
Thanks for your support. We are in the process of setting up a trust fund for him as people are asking to make donations.
Great Article
This is something definitely worth reporting. Not often to you see something of this magnitude.
Use Your Brain
Use your brain and not play football. May not keep your brain if you if you play.
Great Article!
Great to read of a young man withthe courage to pursue his dreams. Wishing him well!
