Overheated dryer leads to Va. Beach townhome fire

VIRGINIA BEACH

An overheated dryer led to a townhome fire Saturday, temporarily displacing three people.

Residents reported the fire at 3235 Creekside Drive at 12:23 p.m. and firefighters put out the flames in less than 10 minutes, according to Battalion Chief James Ramsey, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

No one was injured in the fire, but the townhome had moderate fire damage and heavy smoke damage, Ramsey said.

The Red Cross Disaster Team provided lodging assistance to two adults and three children affected by the fire, according to a news release from the organization.

The Fire Department encourages people to remove lint from dryers after each use and periodically clean dryer vents. Combustible products should be stored a safe distance away from the unit, Ramsey said.

Pilot writer Jennifer Jiggetts contributed to this report.
