DISTRICT PREVIEWS

Swimming

Beach District

When and where  Diving – Bayside Rec Center, 8 a.m. today; swimming – Princess Anne Rec Center, noon today

Admission  $6, $4 students

Outlook  Perennial powers, the Cox boys and girls again won regular-season titles without a loss. The girls capped an unbeaten season last week with a slim, 15-point victory over Princess Anne. The boys, meanwhile, ran through the district in dominating fashion, defeating their district foes by 130-plus points each. The Falcons returned nearly all of their lineup from last year’s Eastern Region champion and Group AAA state runner-up. In diving, First Colonial’s Lauren Hadley vies for a fourth consecutive Beach District title.

Eastern District

When  Today – boys, 10 a.m.; girls, 4 p.m.

Where   Maury High School

Admission  $7, $3 ages 6-11

Outlook  The Granby girls knocked off Maury two weeks ago, handing the Commodores their first regular-season district defeat in more than 30 years. Sisters Helen and Joanna Makriyianis won three events. The Churchland boys won the regular-season district title, ending Maury's recent domination. NOTE: An earlier version of this story said Maury was the regular-season champion.

Southeastern District

When  9:30 a.m. today

Where  Hampton University

Outlook  Western Branch’s boys and girls are the defending champions, but both were unseated by Hickory during the regular season this year. Hickory’s boys and girls dominated, defeating all eight district teams by 37 or more points.

GYMNASTICS

Beach District

When  10 a.m. today

Where   Bayside High School

Outlook  Cox won its first regular-season title in 15 years, while Kellam has gained momentum since an early loss to Cox. Ocean Lakes and Salem should battle for the third and final Eastern Region berth. Individually, new champions will be crowned in all-around and all four events, since last year’s winners have either graduated or are not competing. Kellam’s Marianna Parker and Cox’s Sara Hon and Elizabeth Mancini are the top contenders for the all-around title.

The lack of swimming

The lack of swimming coverage across the board is amazing. Since it is not about football or basketball, swimming gets ignored. We want to read about the good things kids are doing. Don't blame the coaches, the blame rests with your reporting staff.
