It's nice to hope they're going to college to get a degree
and that the athletic scholarship is merely a means for them to get the education.
However, in reality, many of them will just take up seats in the classrooms, go through the motions of "going to college," and bail out at the first opportunity to transfer to a better college team or be drafted by the NFL.
I agree with the poster
not enough attention is paid to students who get academic scholarships, but I don'n understand why so many people are disparaging those who get atheletic scholarships. I just wonder how many of them had the intelligence, skills or talents to get Any kind of scholarship.
Pardon the mistake- I meant
Pardon the mistake- I meant don't.
It's sad that some of these
It's sad that some of these posters reinforce their own personal beliefs that these kids are simply dumb jocks... Celebrate the fact that they're actually doing something positive with their lives! Good luck to all these future college football players!
Two Words
Who cares? If they don't make it in professional football the dregree they earn in screen door repair won't help them in the workplace.
Wrong screen name
Speechless . . . you should call yourself ignorant, judging, bitter, or any other negative adjective. Think what you want, but there are a lot of student athletes that are there for the student portion as well. I'll speak ODU, because that is what I know. The two biggest name seniors last year (Ronnie Cameron and Thomas Demarco, Ronnie will probably be playing on Sundays this fall) are not only graduating with legit undergrad degrees, but their Masters in Business. Just sayin' . . .
Standards
Can't wait for the call to lower the standards so these young men can go to school....just wait..it's coming
Why we're losing
The fact that we place a higher value on sports than education shows why we are falling behind as a world leader. We should be celebrating those students who received full scholarships for their academic merits rather than those who get a full ride to entertain the masses at football games.
WOW!
Whoop-de-f222in-doo! Why this deserves column space is beyond comprehension! If as much coverage were placed on academic success, we might have something to talk about!
You read it . . .
