Sears Holdings Corp. will lay off 84 people when it closes its store at The Gallery at Military Circle.
Sears had announced in December that the store was among up to 120 Sears and Kmart stores to be closed. It did not say how many people work there.
A state website announcing layoffs and business closings on Thursday listed 84 layoffs at a Sears location in Norfolk. Kimberly Freely, a spokeswoman for Sears, said in an email that the notice refers to the Military Circle store.
Sears' filing was required under the U.S. Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. It said the "impact date" would be April 22. That doesn't mean the store will close then, Freely said.
April 22 is "the earliest date that positions would be eliminated," Freely wrote. "No closing date has been determined at this time."
Part-timers make up the majority of the total, Freely said. Workers will be notified of openings at nearby Sears and Kmart stores. Some will receive severance pay, she said.

It's been real
Gone are the heady days when we walked over an arched red bridge and into the nether world of China Garden Restuarant, Hip Pocket, Mothers Records & Tapes, a movie, and dreaming with the gleaming 1979 Porsches displayed by Checkered Flag that could be had for $31,000 and up along the corridors. Lynnhaven, can't fix that til you fix the surroundings. So what we have left is the possibility of building a Five-Diamond Greenbrier Town Center off Clearfield Avenue or the Mount Thrashermore area between Kempsville and Elbow roads. And Virginia Beach can place one at the Oceanfront thus raising property values to levels that make the slumlords and druglords SCREAM!!
Turn it into a TCC campus
I say they should gut it and turn it into a TCC campus just like they did with Tower Mall when it went all gangsta gangsta up in there in the 1990s. Nothing else good can come of it. Old Malls are dead. Otherwise it will sit vacant for 15 years like that FX place that used to be on VB Boulevard.
Sears and Kmart will die a slow death Like Montgomery Wards
Hate to see the store closing. Ive shopped at Military Circle since I was a child. I hated losing Montgomery Wards and Chi Chi's seems like nothing around that are thrives. Now The mall will lose Sears. Kmart at Military and Norview Ave looks like a grave yard or ghost town compared to Walmart. Walmart seems to have a strangle hold on most stores with its one stop get everything strategy. Heck even the Pizza Hut at Military closed. I think when the mall opened all the urban type stores it was a turn off to many of the older customers that use to frequent the mall. I think most now shop at Pembroke or Greenbriar. Maybe things will turn around when our economy improves. I think Malls are dying to specialty stores and the internet.
