A judge convicted shipwrecked sailor Michael Calabrese of misdemeanor trespassing Monday for returning to an Ocean View shelter after he was kicked out.
Calabrese, whose ship the Maybe Tomorrow blew ashore during Hurricane Irene, also was granted a dismissal of a charge of being drunk in public in the Aug. 28 incident. Circuit Judge Jerrauld Jones sentenced Calabrese to 30 days in jail and suspended its execution as long as Calabrese remains on good behavior.
Calabrese testified that he was a registered guest of the Bayview Recreation Center after the shipwreck. He said he returned to the shelter because he wanted to comfort his girlfriend, who also survived the wreck.
A police officer testified that Calabrese had been removed from the shelter earlier because he had been disruptive.

i think
I think he was asked to leave the marina....not sure why, but some marinias want boats out of there before a storm. That said, the usual procedure is to haul the boat out of the water or go down the inter coastal waterway into the Great Bridge area or Dismal Swamp to find a sheltered place to tie up. His last decision I would think would have been to pull into Willoughby Bay and ride it out at anchor. Of all the many options this guy had at the time, he choose the ONLY one you would NOT do....head out into open water. So sounds like he was just nuts.
Why?
Why would someone take a sailboat into a hurricane? That boat was tightly moored the day before.
