SUFFOLK

A 54-year-old city resident driving a minivan on U.S. 58 died after crossing into the opposite lane and hitting a school bus head-on during the morning commute Wednesday.

Fredrick Michael Adkins was driving east on U.S. 58 a little after 9 a.m., when his vehicle crossed the grassy median and hit the westbound bus at Godwin Boulevard, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

Police said they were still trying to determine what caused Adkins - the only person in the van - to veer into head-on traffic. The burgundy minivan ended up wedged under the school bus.

The school bus driver was not injured, and there were no students on the bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver had just dropped off students at Creekside Elementary School and was heading to King's Fork High School to park the bus until school got out, schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said.

The crash narrowed that portion of U.S. 58 to one lane in both directions, causing traffic issues for much of the day.
