SUFFOLK

Trucks carrying a mobile home could cause delays along Interstate 664 and U.S. 58 today.

The “super loads” will be traveling through the city from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. along I-664 and U.S. 58 west, a city news release says. The trucks are expected to begin in Newport News and finish their trip in Franklin.

The loads each are 16 feet wide and 103 feet long. They will have vehicles escorting them.

superloads

VDOT was not aware of these superloads as DMV issues all permits and is responsible for the movement of these large loads on the roadways.

I have to wonder

Why loads like this are not required to be moved at 2am? I'm sure if you add up the economic loss caused by all the other people and goods on the road being delayed it would far outstrip any overtime expenses the company shipping these items would have to bear.

Well said ...

... couldn't agree more. A fair number of truckers *prefer* to drive overnight when the roads are less crowded, so there'd be no shortage of contractors for the load and far less interruption of normal traffic.
