SOUTHEASTERN
The Hickory boys and girls followed their regular-season titles by sweeping the district tournament championships Saturday at Hampton University.
The Hawks’ Susan Hynes picked up victories in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, while teammate Shannon Loud won the 500 free and 100 backstroke. Hickory had 157 points, followed by Great Bridge at 105.
Grassfield’s Christina McLemore (100 butterfly) and Maya Harrington (200 free), Great Bridge’s Taylor Jones (50 free) and Western Branch’s Kasey Stone (diving) and Jamie Wild (100 free) also won individual events.
In the boys meet, Jerry Burton (200 free, 100 backstroke) won two events to pace Hickory; teammates Duncan Mahnken (100 free), Logan Burton (50 free), Shaun Lewis (diving) and Andrew Jackson (100 fly) also earned titles.
The Hawks had 172 points, followed by Western Branch (112).
Other winners were Western Branch’s Stephen O’Donnell (100 breaststroke) and Great Bridge’s John Denning (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle).
EASTERN
The Maury boys and girls – after losing their district regular-season titles for the first time in years – rebounded with comfortable victories in the Eastern District championships at Maury High School.
The Churchland boys had ended the Commodores’ regular-season dominance, but Maury won 9 of 11 events to finish with 513 points, followed by the Truckers (401) and Lake Taylor (357).
The Commodores’ Deion Dean (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly) and Zac Paryzek (100 backstroke, 100 freestyle) each won two events and were part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Tommy Dunleavy added a victory in the 50 free and was part of two winning relays.
Other individual winners were Maury’s Harry Porter (100 breaststroke), Churchland’s Will Wirt (200 freestyle) and Granby’s Milos Tomovic (500 free).
In the girls meet, Maury avenged a regular-season loss to Granby, finishing with 543 points. The Comets were second at 420, followed by Churchland (291).
Madison Hahn (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) and Emily Paryzek (50 and 100 freestyle) each won two events and were part of two winning relay teams.
Granby had victories from Helen Makriyianis (200 free), Joanna Makriyianis (100 breaststroke), Madeline Solano (100 butterfly) and Kasey Lacore (500 free).
BEACH
Kara Alley won the 100 breaststroke – Cox’s only individual title – as the Falcons squeaked past Princess Anne for the title at Princess Anne Recreation Center.
Cox finished with 434 points, while Princess Anne had 413.5 and First Colonial placed third with 284.
First Colonial’s Kylene Hohman (200 free, 100 fly) and Katie Barney (50 and 100 freestyles), Princess Anne’s Mackenzie Cummings (200 IM), Kempsville’s Becca Phillips (400 free) and Kellam’s Jenine Burns (100 backstroke) also were winners.
In the boys meet, Cox’s Nate Dacruz, Austin Temple, Carson Black and Wesley Francis shattered a Beach record in the 200 medley relay as the Falcons cruised to a 219-point victory. Temple and Francis also were part of a record-breaking 200 free realy team, along with Ben Hansen and Dalton Malaby. That record was set in prelims.
Cox finished with 575 points, followed by Princess Anne (356) and First Colonial (300).
Cox’s Hansen (100 and 200 freestyles) won two events and was part of two winning relays, while Dacruz won the 100 backstroke and Temple took the 100 breaststroke.
Princess Anne’s Mark Wilson (200 individual medley) and Harrison Pierce (50 freestyle) and Ocean Lakes’ Brian Burns (100 fly, 400 free) also had titles.
