Thousands say goodbye to Norfolk's 'Uncle Pete'

Posted to: News Norfolk Obituaries

NORFOLK

Thousands of people turned out Monday to say goodbye to attorney and philanthropist Peter G. Decker Jr. in a sendoff more befitting a head of state than a private citizen.

Several thousand people jammed into the Norfolk Waterside Marriott convention center for a memorial service that briefly snarled downtown traffic and attracted most of the city's political elite.

City officials said at least 2,500 attended, including the former and current mayors of Virginia Beach, attorneys, judges, downtown office workers and hundreds of people for whom Decker did personal favors.

Marriott officials did not offer a crowd estimate, but Mayor Paul Fraim said he estimated that more than 4,000 attended.

"It was unlike anything I've seen in this city," he said. "People were jammed into the room, shoulder to shoulder.

"This is a remarkable turnout that speaks volumes about Pete."

The memorial began a few hours after a funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk that was supposed to be limited to immediate family and close friends, but attracted a standing-room crowd of more than 500.

Businesses throughout the city, including the long-closed Riverview Theater on Granby Street north of the Virginia Zoo and Baxter's Sports Lounge downtown, put up signs paying homage to Decker. "We will miss U Uncle Pete," said the marquee at the Riverview.

Decker, 76, succumbed to cancer on Friday, ending a career in which he built a powerful law firm and became a multimillionaire, general district court substitute judge and influential political figure who raised millions of dollars for charity.

Decker was known by those close to him as "Uncle Pete" for the help he gave hundreds of people.

"That's why this room is full," said the Rev. Joseph H. Metzger III, the pastor at Blessed Sacrament. "He did so much to help so many people."

Metzger led the Mass, praising Decker as a man "who built bridges between people."

At Decker's request, Fraim eulogized him during the brief memorial service a few hours later. Before the memorial, people ate finger food, viewed photographs of Decker on six wide-screen televisions and listened to recordings of music sung by Decker, who as a college student helped make ends meet by singing in nightclubs.

The Norfolk State University band played on Main Street as people made their way into the Marriott.

Fraim then spoke, paying homage to Decker's wife of nearly 50 years, Bess Decker, and sons Peter III, Paul and Phillip.

"No one lived a life any fuller, or with more zest and joy," Fraim said.

"To the entire Decker family, we thank you for sharing him so freely with us for so long."

Paul Decker, who often sang on stage with his father, ended the memorial service, saying his father asked him to sing a song to his mother.

Turning to Bess Decker, he sang, "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me."

"When Paul finished," Fraim said, "there was not a dry eye in the room."

Decker

The outpouring for Mr. Decker was nice--a bit glitzy perhaps, but befitting the man--but I couldn't help thinking of the countless warriors who have given their lives for our freedom and well-being, and get little more than a mention in the news and a small military funeral.
Not knocking the Decker celebration, but just commenting on the dichotomy in our society today.

PETER DECKER JR HAD A SPECIAL NAME

Whether or not you belive in numerology, and whether or not you ever met the man, Peter Decker Jr's name adds up to a special double-number, 66.
That is a number of a progressing transformer who wants to turn things around for people, with an added sense of understanding, recognition, as a family-friendly-person with a spirited-outlook, who could stand-out-in-a-crowd with social-compassion for doing-your-best with happy-inspiration. No wonder many people attended the funeral, because his name added up to a personality that really wanted to help people and at the same be happy and friendly. But don't worry, 66 also adds up to angel, and now we know there is one more angel helping us here on earth, just as much as he did just a few weeks ago.

Don't understand

this number 66 thing. Is it like the devil number 666 but good?

Why are people giving thumbs down to postings about Pete Decker?

I would love to know what's up with the few people that are indicating they don't like the kind words people are writing about Mr. Decker. Is it they just didn't like him? Why? Please give me your justification for that.

What good would it do anyone

What good would it do anyone to post here the things they didn't like about Decker? The Pilot wouldn't post the reasons. And if they did post the reasons, someone like you would report them as dispargaing the family.

if there

is any reference to God, and particularly the Christian God, some folks on here vote it down. I have noticed that on many occasions. I think he was universally liked, so I doubt if it is that. It's a bit odd I agree. He was a good man. He will be greatly missed. A true gentleman.

Bless you Peter

It was a pleasure having known you so many years. My prayers are with your family and friends. Rest in Peace, your effort will continune.

A fitting tribute

Yesterday's event was a fitting tribute to a fun, caring, facinating man. Those who knew him are richer for the experience. We lost a great one, but his legacy remains in the many he inspired.

What a wonderful well

What a wonderful well deserved going home celebration...Norfolk you did well!!! Rest in Paradise, Uncle Pete.

Hope Pete's sons will pick up where their dad left off

"they have a picture of a dude wearing shades as a picture for this story? its a funeral not a blues concert. talk about disrespectful."

What a knuclehead, that was one of Pete Decker's son singing to his mom, article said there was not a dry eye in the room.

Pete will be missed,he gave so much too help so many
