Three locals win TCC's Martin Luther King Jr. awards

Posted to: Education News

Tidewater Community College has announced the winners this year of an award recognizing residents who exemplify the life achievements of Martin Luther King Jr.

Wendy D. Buie, a counselor on the college’s Virginia Beach campus, won the College Distinguished Service Award. She is known for her dedication and her use of humor in counseling, according to a college news release.

TCC student Stacy Lynn Dunbar won the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. She is a straight-A student studying diagnostic medical sonography, and her volunteer work includes a ministry she created to provide food for hungry children.

Maurice A. Jones, publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, won the Community Distinguished Service Award. He serves on several local boards and is “uniquely qualified to meet Martin Luther King Jr.’s challenge of ‘remaining awake through great periods of social change,’” according to the news release.

Congradulations to the 3 people who won the awards. No disrespect, but
just does "remaining awake during social change" warrent an award?
