VIRGINIA BEACH

A police standoff in Kempsville has become a death investigation after two adult victims were found in a home, police said.

SWAT and other officers Friday afternoon surrounded a brick ranch house in the 700 block of Lord Nelson Drive after a possible shooting was reported to police shortly before noon, said Officer Jimmy Barnes, a police spokesman.

Police tried unsuccessfully for four hours to contact someone inside and deployed cameras and a robot, Barnes said. They entered the home sometime after 5 p.m. and found the bodies.

Police released no further information immediately, other than to say they were not looking for suspects.

Lord Nelson Drive is off Locke Lane near Kempsville Road.

Four schools in the area - Kempsville Elementary, Providence Elementary, Kempsville Middle and Kempsville High - were placed on lockdown, but after talking with police, school officials dismissed students on normal schedules, said Eileen Cox, a school division spokeswoman.

No new details were available as of Saturday night.

Officer Tonya Borman, a police spokeswoman, said Saturday that authorities were waiting on autopsy and investigation results.

More information will likely be released early Monday morning, she said.

Pilot staffer Jennifer Jiggetts contributed to this report.
