Va. House passes bill making teachers easier to fire

RICHMOND

Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proposal to phase out Virginia public-school teachers’ de facto tenure system was passed by the House of Delegates today.

As initially proposed by the governor, the measure would have immediately ended the state’s longtime practice of keeping teachers on continuing contracts, replacing them with annual contracts.

In a compromise, the House-passed version would keep current teachers on continuing contracts and put new hires on three-year contracts.

Even that watered-down bill (HB576) was passed on a relatively close 55-43 vote. Twelve Republicans joined most of the House’s Democratic minority in opposing the measure.

One Democrat, Del. Johnny Joannou of Portsmouth, voted for the bill.

House Majority Leader Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, said it’s too hard to fire incompetent teachers under the continuing-contract system.

Democrats disputed that contention and said ending continuing contracts will demoralize teachers.

“This is not the way to attract and retain good teachers,” said Del. Kaye Kory, D-Fairfax County. “This is the way to drive them out of Virginia.”

The measure’s prospects in the state Senate are uncertain.

Teachers

Instead of firing Teachers. Virginians should IMPEACH Va. Governor Bob McDonnell and FIRE the CROOKS in the Virginia General Assembly......

This is just another volley

This is just another volley in the Virginia GOP's war against Virginians. They won't stop until they are voted out.

Teacher legislation

Let's hope and pray the VA Senate kills this bill. They seem to have more sense.

Too late

That was last year, remember?

Almost as hard:

"House Majority Leader Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, said it’s too hard to fire incompetent teachers under the continuing-contract system."

Now if only we could fined a way to fire incompetent legislators under the current gerrymandering, district-manipulating system. That would make more sense, and be much more productive.

Fire the students!

I'm fine with this change as soon as I can remove students from my class and therefore my responsibility who do any of the following:
a) Have poor attendance
b) Sleep in class
c) Refuse to take notes
d) Strike other students/staff
e) Threaten to rape other students/staff

Even the best pizza maker in the world would be unable to make something edible with moldy flour and tomato sauce and rancid pepperoni. Why do people think it's any different for teachers?

FWIW, I'm not claiming all students are like this; but 90+% of mine are.

where?

Must be norfolk schools....

Two messages to young people today about education profession.

No raise for years and no appreciation for the profession. Go into another profession that will reward your efforts.

Republicans hate teachers

Republicans hate teachers and scientists. Why? Because education involves facts.

Chris said, "Republicans hate teachers and scientists. Why? Because education involves facts."

Fact: Chris offers no credible source for this comment, nor is he likely to find any.

Conclusion: Barring any credible source to prove his statement, it is nothing more than a wild, unsubstantiated, absurd, and ignorant opinion.
