Gov. Bob McDonnell is reminding taxpayers that they can file their returns online free.
The Virginia Free File program will allow more than 2 million low to moderate income taxpayers to prepare and electronically file their returns free, according to an announcement from McDonnell’s office. They can receive their refunds in a few days.
The program is modeled on the Internal Revenue Service’s Free File program that also allows taxpayers who meet certain criteria to file free online using commercial tax preparation software.
Free File supports state 760 form and schedules.
Taxpayers also can use the state tax department’s new free fillable forms. Taxpayers who don’t qualify for the Free File program can fill out forms online and file them. The math is calculated automatically.
There is no income threshold for the fillable forms program.
