Virginia Beach-based Stihl recalls 3,000 chainsaws

VIRGINIA BEACH

Stihl Inc., the Virginia Beach-based power-tool manufacturer, has voluntarily recalled about 3,000 gas-powered chain saws, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday.

The federal agency said the flywheel on the MS 391 chain saw might crack. No one has been injured, the safety commission said, but pieces of the flywheel could separate and strike a user or bystanders.

The tools were sold by Stihl dealers from March to July 2011. Consumers should stop using them, Stihl and the agency said. Stihl said consumers can take them to a dealer for a free repair.

In May, Stihl voluntarily recalled about 2.3 million trimmers, edgers and other tools because the company said they could start a fire. Stihl officials blamed the volatile properties of ethanol, a fuel additive.

In an interview last year, Stihl's president, Fred Whyte, said: "The safety of our customers is always paramount. But if you build as many units as we do, occasionally it's going to come up snake-eyes."

He said what?

"Come up snake eyes"? Who in the business world talks that way?

Snake eyes in the gambling

Snake eyes in the gambling arena would be "Craps" a looser after the first roll. I suspect he means on occasion you will miss one. Stihl is a great product,Glad they have a plant here in Va Beach...

A local customer

I am glad to learn that the company is a local Virginia business. Though I believe in the free market. Of course, I 'll continue to buy imported products. After all I enjoy German beer, Whiskey from the UK and so forth. Free market is great but as an individual my choice is to first buy American. God bless.

Stihl

Stihl is actually an international company that, I believe, is based out of Germany.

Stihl

Does it matter if german comppny or american company? People there earn the money here, and spend it here.
And other companies, suppliers are here too and make business here.
