Someday, Ameer Kareem Hamid Baksh wanted to return to his family's homeland, Trinidad, his father said.
But he'll never get there. The thought moved Kemal Baksh to tears Monday afternoon as he made a public plea for help finding the killer who ended his son's life.
"My son, he's an angel," Baksh said.
"Anyone who knows anything, or hears anything, or sees anything, I would love it if they would contact police," Ameer's mother, Marilyn Baksh said. "Help us with this."
The shot rang out Thursday just after 4:30 p.m. in the Windsor Oaks neighborhood, according to police.
Officers arrived to find Ameer Baksh, 20, with a gunshot wound in the 3800 block of Old Forge Road. He had been riding a skateboard just before the shooting, said Detective John Allen with Virginia Beach police.
Baksh, who lived with his family in the 3900 block of Water Oak Lane, was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and later pronounced dead. Police are looking for three males between the ages of 17 and 25, said Grazia Moyers, a police spokeswoman.
The Baksh family is hoping for justice.
Kemal Baksh, a disabled Vietnam combat veteran, said his son was kind and sympathetic, happy and loved by family, friends and neighbors.
He was never jealous or envious, his father said. He never answered back.
"He was just pure love," his mother said.
Baksh graduated from Green Run High School in 2010 and worked at a nearby gas station, they said. He was the fourth of five children, the second son in his family.
He loved to travel and had hiked to Ohio and hitchhiked to California. Someday he was hoping to return to Trinidad, his father said.
"I don't know why anyone would want to take a good soul like him. I don't understand it," Marilyn Baksh said through tears.
"Twenty years of my life taking care of him and in a second they just snuffed out his life," she said. "God has a better purpose for him. That's what I believe."
