Rep. Jim Moran’s son, Patrick Moran, is in trouble again.
Washington City Paper reports that the younger Moran pleaded guilty today to simple assault after a Dec. 1 incident at a 14th Street bar in which he slammed his girlfriend’s head into a metal trash can cage, according to a police report.
He was sentenced to probation after pleading down from an original charge of felony assault, City Paper reported.
This statement from Moran's girlfriend, Kelly Hofmann, was released today: "This was an accident that has been blown out of proportion. The statements in the police report are inaccurate. Pat and I were arguing, one of my high heels gave out, and I fell into the side of a trashcan. On impact, I fractured my nose. False conclusions were made as a result. I hope our privacy will be respected."
It’s the second time in as many months that Moran has landed in hot water. In late October, a video surfaced in which he seemed to offer advice about how to cast fake ballots. He was serving as field director of his father’s reelection campaign.
The latest incident occurred after an argument between Moran and his girlfriend over him talking to another woman at the bar, according to the police report, which was posted online by City Paper. His girlfriend suffered heavy bleeding from her nose and an extremely swollen right eye, the report said.
The congressman, a Democrat from Virginia, issued a statement in response to the news.
"I hope their privacy will be respected," he said. "They look forward to putting this embarrassing situation behind them.”
