2 hurt in fire aboard carrier Truman off Virginia coast

Two sailors were injured Tuesday night when a fire erupted while an F/A-18C was being refueled on the flight deck aboard the carrier Harry S. Truman off the coast.

The jet was parked forward of the island on deck when the fire began, according to a Navy news release. The pilot ejected and landed on the flight deck. He received medical treatment onboard the ship and then was transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C.

The fire was extinguished by flight deck firefighters.

A sailor assigned to the ship suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening and was taken to the hospital.

An investigation is under way.

The ship is conducting flight operations off the coast of Virginia.
