Outer Banks

It is surrounded by 900 miles of water and has the largest estuary system in the world along with wildlife refuges, maritime forests, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast at Jockey's Ridge.

This two-acre public beach has a striking view of the George P. Coleman Bridge from the heart of historic Yorktown.

Buckroe Beach and Park
Located on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay, Buckroe Beach is ideal for those looking for a long, sandy shoreline and gentle surf. Cyclists and strollers navigate the paved boardwalk and lounge on the grass. Summer concerts can be heard in the outdoor pavilion. There are sheltered picnic tables, restrooms and a fishing pier. Rentals available nearby include charter fishing and personal watercraft.

Huntington Park/Fort Fun
This park and public beach is near the base of the James River Bridge, a short walk from the Crab Shack restaurant and fishing pier.The beach has shallow water, and is small with a family feel. It has attendants from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The beach area has a large playground, picnic shelters, public boat ramp, snack bar, restrooms and tennis, basketball and sand volleyball courts. On a bluff is Fort Fun, a multi-level wooden structure with maze, haunted castle, bucking bronco, slides, swings and more. There's a freshwater children's fishing pier on Lake Biggins and a spectacular rose garden for adults nearby.

This beach on Norfolk's Chesapeake Bay is a popular spot for folks who'd rather spend more time at the beach than driving to it. With commercial piers, bait shops and tackle rentals, it makes an ideal fishing spot as well. Enjoy mild waves of the Chesapeake Bay.

Chick's Beach
Short for Chesapeake Beach, Chick's Beach attracts mainly locals with its calm to mild bay water and picturesque view of sailboats, boardsails and kayaks. Find Chick's just over the Lesner Bridge, off of Shore Drive.

Lynnhaven Inlet
The calm waters of Lynnhaven Inlet provides the perfect conditions for jet skiing, catamaraning and windsurfing. The waters are also seasonally populated by fishermen scoping puppy drum, speckled trout and flounder.

Oceanfront and Boardwalk
The hotel-lined resort strip offers 38 miles of beach, eateries, bars, souvenir shops, a boardwalk and bike path open for rollerblading and skating. The waters are open for swimming during lifeguard hours, surfing and bodyboarding at restricted areas. Crabbing and fishing are available off of the 14th Street Pier. Festivals and live entertainment at the 17th and 24th Street Parks are booked regularly during the summer. The strip is also host to national surfing, volleyball and sand soccer competitions.
Sandbridge / Little Island Park
Mostly locals and families populate the low-key stretch of waning shoreline. The private neighborhood beach is at the end of Sandbridge Road.
Picnic at one of two area parks, which are located at the beginning and end of Sandbridge Road.
Beachcombers can walk south with the destination of North Carolina not too far away.

The North End
You'll find locals mostly along the spacious, residential stretch of dunes from 40th street to the 80's.
