School Supply Drive launches in Hampton Roads to benefit children in Newport News
School Supply Drive launches in Hampton Roads to benefit children in NNews
(Newport News, VA August 25, 2008) Project School Supplies is launching this week in Hampton Roads to raise support for children living in the south east district of Newport News, VA. The locations to drop school supplies are as follows: all Old Point National Bank locations, Heaven and Earth Bookstores, Salon Vivace locations, Commonwealth Exterminating Company, Cooks Moving, and Star 94.1 radio station. The school supply drive is running through September 5th, 2008 and will be distributed on September 6th at the South East Community Day Parade and Festival.
Project School Supplies is part of an ongoing project supported by the Peninsula Churches for strategic assistance to the community. Downtown Newport News has had a serious wave of crime plaguing the district and the churches are rolling up their sleeves to assist. In collaboration with Hampton Roads businesses, South East Community Day Parade and Festival (www.southeastdayparade.com), and area churches, Project School Supplies will aid in the items needed so that every child in downtown Newport News can have the proper resources for their education.
Project School Supplies is under the umbrella of Project Jerusalem, a collaboration of churches to distribute 25,000 bibles by nearly 5000 volunteers at the South East Day Parade on September 6th. This effort is a "no strings attached" outreach where no sermons or other proselytizing will take place. It's simply sharing God's love with a hurting community.
South East Virginia President of the Southern Christian Leadership Council and organizer for the 18th Annual South East Community Day Parade and Festival, Andrew Shannon, welcomes Project School Supplies and Project Jerusalem to the event, "The SCLC is all about unity and building stronger communities. These efforts presented by Project Jerusalem will aid significantly in the vision by offering hope and opportunity. School supplies are a practical way to help each child."
Project Jerusalem is organized by Rev. Cory Newell of Thomas Road Church and Rev. Vic Pope of Bethel Temple. For more information, please contact Rev. Cory Newell at 757.876.4920 or peninsulachurchesunited@gmail.com or any of the distribution locations: Old Point National Bank, Heaven and Earth Bookstores, Salon Vivace locations, Commonwealth Exterminating, and Star 94.1 radio station.

Virginia Air & Space Center Celebrates 2008 Success
From the Virginia Air & Space Center:
Hampton, VA—The Virginia Air & Space Center recently celebrated 16 years of educational excellence with total admissions of more than 412,000, marking its thirteenth consecutive year of operating in the black. The Center continued to serve as the region’s leading source of informal science education with more than 220,000 children receiving SOL-based, hands-on education programs. Science camps and overnight camp-ins were also popular with more than 1,100 campers exploring a variety of scientific themes.
Quality educational programming was supported by corporate gifts, contracts with schoolsystems and education grants in 2008, including $70,000 from the VuBay Foundation to provideeducational programming for Hampton City Schools students and to support the Center’s Opportunity Program. Community partners like Langley Federal Credit Union, Riverside Health System, NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton Chevrolet, Daily Press, 13 News and Cox Communications were instrumental in providing quality educational programming through their support. The Center’s Opportunity Program, funded by private donations, enabled the Center to provide education programs to more than 23,000 underprivileged students. More than 8,500 of these students participated in programs sponsored by donations that qualified for Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) Tax Credits.
The Virginia Air & Space Center also saw increases in other revenue areas including a 7% increase in facility rentals and a 7% increase in membership. Exhibit admission increased 7% due to the continued popularity of the Center’s new gallery, Space Quest: Exploring the Moon, Mars & Beyond, and three new traveling exhibits: Magic: The Science of Illusion, Football, and Candy Unwrapped.
The Virginia Air & Space Center also presented a wide variety of educational and entertaining IMAX films in the Riverside 3D IMAX Theater. Audiences enjoyed regular feature IMAX films, such as Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia 3D and Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk 3D, while Hollywood blockbuster films, like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Spiderwick Chronicles, attracted new visitors.
The Virginia Air & Space Center continued to serve the community in 2008 with Celebrations by the Bay – a community event series that produced several events in Downtown Hampton. Community events included the 2nd Annual Great Pumpkin Fall Fling, the 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland Tree Lighting, Saturday Summer Street Fest Series, Romance on the River: Wine, Art & Jazz Festival, Family Fun Fridays, Crabtown Festival, Concert in the Park and the 9th Annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival. These events drew more than 159,000 people to Downtown Hampton, a 45% increase over the previous year. In addition, Downtown Hampton on Ice, an outdoor ice skating rink, returned for a second year.
The Virginia Air & Space Center is the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. The Center is located at 600 Settlers Landing Road in downtown Hampton. Take I-64 to exit 267 and follow Settlers Landing Road. The Center will be on your left.
'Snap, Crackle and Pop' Goes the Turtles
From the Virginia Aquarium
Three rehabilitated Kemp’s ridley sea turtles dubbed “Snap, Crackle and Pop” will be released by the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team with a crowd of onlookers from the Eastern Shore town of Cape Charles August 26, at 11 a.m.
After the recent release of rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle Hampton at Cape Charles, Town Manager Joe Vaccaro invited the Stranding Response Team to return and conduct a free educational outreach program for its citizens. This will begin prior to the release at 9:30 a.m. at the Gazebo on Bay Avenue. The Team will give a brief presentation on their mission which is to promote the conservation of marine animal species through stranding response, research, rehabilitation and education. An educational display will also be featured which will include a slideshow, informational banners, dolphin and turtle artifacts, and a flipper bone puzzle made from an actual stranded humpback whale.
Assistant Stranding Coordinator Christina Trapani said, “Once veterinarians gave Snap, Crackle and Pop approval for their release, we agreed that Cape Charles would be the perfect place for them to begin their second chance since the Chesapeake Bay is a critical habitat for these amazing animals.” The public is invited to attend both the release and the outreach program.
Snap, Crackle and Pop represent the most endangered of the sea turtle species – the Kemp’s ridleys. These juvenile sea turtles are about the size of dinner plates and range in weight from 6 – 10 pounds. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center located in Brigantine, N.J., initially rescued them from the cooling water intake canal of a local nuclear generator station during the month of July. They all had various cuts and bruises and needed medical attention before being reintroduced into the wild.
After their transfer (July 14) to the Virginia Aquarium Marine Animal Care Center, their course of treatment included x-rays, antibiotics, wound cleansing and healthy meals of vitamin supplements, herring, squid and shrimp. Trapani added, “Pop, the smallest ridley, prefers squid tentacles with no heads and from the surface only. Snap chews up and spits out herring and prefers shrimp with the shell removed. Crackle consumes all!”
To report a dead or live stranded marine mammal or sea turtle call the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program 24-hour hotline at (757) 437-6159.
New Goodwill Store Opens
From Goodwill Virginia:
As part of its expansion plan in Hampton Roads, Goodwill is replacing an existing location with two new ones, increasing its offerings and employment in the area.
Perhaps the more visible of the two new facilities is Goodwill’s newest store. At 9:00 am this morning, August 14, Goodwill opened at 600 S. Lynnhaven Road, in the Lynnhaven North Shopping Center next to Lynnhaven Mall. The location formerly housed an A&N store and offers 10,000 square feet of recently renovated retail space for bargain hunters to shop. Goodwill will also maintain a donation center at the store where it will accept clothing and other household items. Donations may be made either on a walk in basis or at the convenient drive through. This store is a relocation of the Goodwill store at 5565 Virginia Beach Boulevard, which will begin store relocation sales soon.
Shoppers will find a great selection of merchandise, including fashions for the entire family, as well as electronics, toys, books, house wares, furniture and unique home accents, with new items arriving daily. Store hours are M-S, 9-8 and Sunday 11-5.
The other new location for Goodwill is at 1345 Diamond Springs Road in Virginia Beach. In addition to administrative offices, this site houses a donation center as well as a central processing area for multiple donation centers throughout the area.
This facility is also home to the Medical Adaptive Gifting Program, which accepts and distributes gently used medical equipment to those in need. In October Diamond Springs will also be the home to Hampton Roads’ first Goodwill Outlet, where merchandise can be bought at even more preferred pricing, including goods available by the pound.
