FREE Access to Community Resources for Virginia Beach families

NEIGHBORHOOD APPRECIATION DAY PROVIDES VIRGINIA BEACH FAMILIES FREE ACCESS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Iglesia ni Cristo, Church of Christ, gives back to neighbors through community partnership event   VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Aug. 15, 2011) – Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) or Church of Christ, one of the fastest growing international Christian organizations, will thank residents of Hampton Roads on Saturday, August 20 for their continuous support and hospitality throughout its growth, at its inaugural Neighborhood Appreciation Day hosted at the Virginia Beach house of worship on 1108 Thompkins Lane from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hundreds of community members are expected to receive FREE services for everyday living sponsored by the Iglesia ni Cristo, including health screenings and consultations, disease prevention and wellness education; family studio portraits; sports mentoring; children’s games, prizes and crafts; and refreshments and live entertainment. The day of service is part of the INC Giving Project, the organization's newly launched philanthropic program to help families and communities during challenging economic times, leveraging the skills and expertise of Church members to implement positive solutions and offer services for the basic needs of their neighbors.

“The services we’re offering our neighbors are strategically aligned with the needs of the region to ensure we’re providing children and families everyday resources not often supplied free of cost.” said Manuel Palad, Iglesia ni Cristo District Minister of Northeastern Seaboard. "More nonprofits are unfortunately closing their doors with the downturn of the economy, but even after nearly 100 years, the INC is still growing internationally; it's our way of saying thank you to our neighbors and opening our doors to those who've welcomed us on their street every week for the last 25 years."

Originally in Norfolk, the community establishment found its home at the present chapel location in the most populous city in the state after seeing a continuous increase in membership, and has since led to the development of an additional local congregation in the region in Newport News, Va. There are currently more than 38 congregations in the Northeastern region of the U.S. alone.

Nonprofits and faith-based organizations have long helped fill the gap between those in need and what the government provides in benefits and social services, but the increased cut of state programs and the impact of the recession is widening the gap. Cuts to social service programs mean charitable groups and faith-based organizations are expected to service more people with even greater needs.

“We don't want to just say thank you to our neighbors, we want to show them our appreciation,” said Palad. “Our members are taking a multi-service approach to addressing the issues facing residents of the area while setting the tone for future initiatives that support family and neighborhood development.”

The mission of the INC Giving Project is to extend the presence of the Iglesia ni Cristo members to its community partners by supporting their efforts to provide solutions to help families succeed and achieve. The Neighborhood Appreciation Day in Virginia Beach is part of a global initiative to share faith through acts of kindness by meeting people’s everyday needs, engaging thousands of members in supporting local neighborhoods and strengthening the bond with their communities.

For more information on the Neighborhood Appreciation Day or upcoming INC Giving projects in the region, call (757) 404-3363 or email incgiving@inctvprod.net. The Virginia Beach local congregation house of worship is located at 1108 Thompkins Lane.

Virginia Sales Tax Break Holiday will take place on August 5-7

Virginia is one of several states that have sales-tax holidays for back-to-school shopping.  Many items will be exempt from sales tax.

Here’s a bit of information directly from the VA Department of Taxation’s website;

When: First full weekend of August (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) each year. The 2011 holiday will take place on August 5-7, 2011.

What's Exempt: During this three-day period, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.

For additional information in regards to guidelines, FAQ’s lists of exempt school supplies ad exempt clothing and footwear click here.

Happy Shopping!!!

Free Bowling for Kids all Summer long

Greetings Everyone,

I posted earlier in the summer kids bowl free from kidsbowlfree.com.  A couple of weeks ago I ran into http://www.freebowling.amf.com.  All you need to do is go online and register your children 16 and under.  They will email you a coupon weekly that's good for the entire week. You get 2 free games per child everyday.  The only thing you have to pay for is the shoe rental.  They also have lunch specials on their menu for $2.99 and that includes the drink! I visited the AMF Western Branch Lanes and it was pretty simple. There were plenty of open lanes and from what I could tell there were several people using the free coupon vouchers.  My only advice would be that if you think you are going to eat while bowling, make sure you order your food as soon as you can.  It took me 30 minutes to get my order, which consisted of cheese toast and fries.  But other than that it was a great experience to take the kids out while escaping the heat to bowl for free (besides your shoe rental).

Thanks for taking time out to visit my blog. I hope this helps you find something cool to do. Please leave some comments with feedback or email me of what you like, don't like, recommendations, and things you would like to see on my new blog. FREE Slurpee Day is tomorrow, Monday July 11-at 7 Eleven!!!

Hello Everyone,

Sorry I have been missing in action within the last several weeks.  My pregnancy has been a little bumpy thus far so I've been unable to post.  I knew when I saw this free Slurpee deal at 7 Eleven that I had to share.  Enjoy!!!

FREE Slurpee's at 7 Eleven on Monday, July 11th in celebration of their birthday!!! 7-Eleven Toasts 84 Years of Convenience with 5 Million Free Slurpee Drinks

Dallas (July 7, 2011) -- They have become summer traditions -- fireworks on the Fourth, Major League ... and Little League ... baseball games, hot dog-eating contests and free Slurpee® drinks at 7-Eleven® stores on July 11, or 7-Eleven Day.

7-Eleven, Inc., the company that invented convenience retailing 84 years ago in Dallas, Texas, invites customers to celebrate its birthday this coming Monday with a free 7.11-ounce frozen Slurpee drink. Participating 7-Eleven stores across the U.S. and Canada will serve up 5 million free 7.11-ounce Slurpee frozen carbonated beverages this day while supplies last.

“Slurpee-brations” and 7-Eleven birthday parties will be held at select stores with music, entertainment, prizes and food sampling, and Slurpee-mobiles will provide free samples at select 7-Eleven stores across the country.

“7-Eleven Day and giving away free Slurpee beverages is our way of thanking customers for their patronage throughout the year and showing appreciation for their support,” said Jesus Delgado-Jenkins, 7-Eleven’s senior vice president of merchandising, marketing and logistics.

”Five million is the most Slurpee drinks we’ve ever given away in a day; just two years ago, we handed out 3 million,” he added. “7-Eleven Day is synonymous with free Slurpee day, because of how popular the Slurpee giveaway has become. We’ve been serving free Slurpees on July 11 since our 75th birthday in 2002, and it continues to be a hit with customers. People start asking about it in the Spring. Even without the 5 million free Slurpee drinks, July is the biggest month of the year for Slurpee sales. What better drink for the hottest month of the year.”

July 11 marks the day that the world’s No. 1 convenience retailer observes its birthday and other company milestones. 7-Eleven, the world’s first convenience store, began its run in 1927 when a Southland Ice Company employee started selling bread, milk and eggs on an ice dock in a Dallas suburb. Since that inauspicious start, “convenience” has become big business. The small ice company has grown into a major international retailing chain with 8,600 7-Eleven stores in North America and approximately 41,500 stores worldwide.
