Feeding Fido

You’ve heard me talk about feeding quality dog food before. I always tell people to get the best dog food they can afford. So, what do I mean by that? I did some research on pet foods a while back and learned a lot about what’s in your pet’s food. It’s not what you think it is and it’s not what the pictures on the bag suggest it is either.

Pets On A Budget

I’ve been busy this week trying to help find foster homes for pets. I don’t think I helped much though. There are so many pets that need temporary homes while their people are working out living arrangements. Or, they need forever homes because their people have lost their place to live and couldn’t keep their pets. It’s a heartbreaking situation to be in.

Doggie Doo in the City

I read an article yesterday by Debbie Messina. It was about the dispensers with little bags attached to trashcans in downtown Norfolk. It seems that not all residents in downtown Norfolk pick up after their dogs. So, the city decided to help them out. It’s actually a good idea if people use it.

AKC Pet Promise

You know I’m not concerned too much about pedigrees and AKC registrations. If it has fur and walks on all fours, it’s generally welcome at my house. I have a house suited for waifs and strays of all kinds, humans and animals.

Pet Emergency Preparedness

You may be getting tired of hearing about hurricane preparedness. You can pick up all these bookllets all over the place. They come in handy if you read them and do what they suggest. Otherwise, it's a waste of paper. But, if you're not prepared, what are you going to do with your pets in an emergency? Where are you going to go with your pet?

Protecting Pets

I recently got an email from a reader with an idea. It took longer to get the information together than I thought it would but here it is. About 500,000 pets are affected by home fires every year. Some of them don’t make it out alive. ADT, the AKC, and the National Volunteer Fire Council have come up with some tips to help keep pets safe from home fires.

Pet People

Someone asked me a question this week. They didn’t like the answer either. A person asked if I would get rid of my cats for the right man. Yes, I’m single and have dogs and cats. But you knew that already.

Cheerios Box To The Rescue!

It’s rough having 4 kittens in a small house. We have plenty of toys but these little ones were climbing the walls. I accidentally found the perfect play thing for them, a twin size Cheerios box. They love it!

Mark Your Calendar!

Making plans for cooler weather? Save Sunday, September 21st, for some fun with your dog. That’s when the Suffolk Humane Society is having its first Mutt Strutt to raise money for homeless animals in Suffolk.

Dog Parks and Free Food

I was doing some research on the internet recently and came across a pro and con list for dog parks. I don’t have a chance to go to dog parks. First, Mac was attacked several times by a much bigger dog before I got him. He doesn’t do well with new places that have strange dogs. Second, I don’t drive. HRT doesn’t really want dogs on the bus unless they are working dogs.
