Nite! Nite!

Books are doors into other worlds, doors that do what no other media can do, transport us into the fiery depths of our imaginations. Books teach; books soothe; books are lifetime friends.

Cruising the Caribbean

We just returned from a wonderful cruise to the Caribbean, 7 glorious days of luxury and rest and relaxation, and I recommend it to all. Our stateroom was small but comfortable, with a nice balcony overlooking the starboard side of the ship. We never had that when I was in the Navy.

Marvelous Rainy Fall Day -- Hooray!

Join me in celebrating a day of relaxation!
It is comfortable, rainy and lazy here at the Whitehill abode, the rainy part is outdoors, which is good.

Get Over It, McCainites . . . .

Your man lost fair and square.
It is a part of our Constitutional Republic that power changes hands, and that is the beauty of our system, that it is done peacefully. It is also very American to get behind whomever is elected and help him to become the best President possible.

Republicans Killed Themselves, Nationwide

Republicans killed themselves by trying to be less conservative, much less conservative. They paid the price for that lack of conservatism last night in the final count.

Take a Book or an I-Pod and a Raincoat to Vote

It seemed everyone in my neighborhood was in line starting before six this morning. When I got to the Stuart Polling Precinct in Norfolk right around that time, the line was already out the door, around two corners of the school and almost halfway up te block. And it was raining steadily.

Lying is "All-American"

There was an interesting and timely article about polls here at Hamptonroads.com/Pilotonline.com, "How Much Credence Should You Give a Political Poll?" On-line polls are, of course, totally unreliable, and the scientific polls are not perfect. Does anyone remember Dewey vs. Truman in 1948?

Ahno Struck My Sandwich Chord

In her blog, I saw That, Ahno describes how she learned to make tiny, itty-bitty sandwiches for her church's coffee hour. I had not yet eaten breakfast, so the blog got me hungry, and it got me to thinking about sandwiches.

Ambassador Oberndorf?

This morning's on-line story about Virginia Beach's Mayoral Campaigns tickled me, figuratively of course. I could easily become confused by current Mayor Oberndorf's comment that she has been an ambassador for Virginia Beach. Huh. I could have sworn that Ambassador and Mayor were two distinctly different offices in government. Huh. Let me tell you right off, if there

What Are We Celebrating Today?

The man, Columbus, had no idea where he was, thought he was in India when he arrived near, not on, our continent. Then he set the wheels in motion that would lead to the criminal abuse of the natives in North American for the next 500+ years.
Just what is it, please remind me, that we are celebrating today?
