Chesapeake fire crew finds no trapped dog in sewer

CHESAPEAKE Firefighters ended their search Sunday night for a possible trapped dog in drain pipes near the intersection of Meadowbrook Lane and Mapleton Crescent in Western Branch. Units reported to the scene about 5:40 p.m. Sunday after someone called Animal Control, Capt. Scott Saunders said.

Crews rescue man from Chesapeake house fire

CHESAPEAKE

Firefighters rescued a man from a burning building this morning after a single-family home caught fire.

Crews were dispatched to 614 Sparrow Rd. in Indian River at 5:09 a.m., according to Capt. Mike Thibeault, a fire department spokesman. They found smoke billowing from the attic of the house and flames coming out the back, he said.

Teen confesses in beating of ex-NFL player

CHESAPEAKE A 16-year-old boy confessed Friday to attacking former NFL player Ed Beard last year during a gang initiation. Staring at his feet and with his hands cuffed in front of him, James Richardson-Jackson pleaded guilty to four felonies, including malicious wounding by mob and using force for gang recruitment.

Hour-long closure next week for High-Rise Bridge

CHESAPEAKE The High-Rise Bridge on Interstate 64 will be closed for one hour Wednesday night while crews remove some equipment from under the lift span. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., according to a Virginia Department of Transportation news release. Drivers can use the Downtown Tunnel as an alternate route.  

Great Bridge girls, Grassfield boys win in soccer

CHESAPEAKE A little one-two passing between Grassfield's Corey Cullop and Michael Abraham put the Hickory defense to sleep. Then Evan McNair's header woke everyone up. McNair's second-half strike held up and the Grizzlies beat the Hawks 1-0 in the Southeastern District tournament championship Thursday at Grassfield.

Wins helped Oscar Smith's Cherry rethink destiny

CHESAPEAKE Michael Cherry thought he was destined to be a football player. A long, lanky receiver with breakaway speed, he believed he was talented enough to someday star on the Oscar Smith High School football team. So he mostly overlooked track. "I can count the number of practices he came to on one hand," said Walt Green, coach of the Real Deal club track team.
