Gruss: VDOT missed the mark on road signs

 Last week, Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Department of Transportation unveiled a series of electronic signs to help motorists find the quickest route to the Oceanfront. But I reworked these signs to provide a more accurate measure on how far visitors are from Virginia Beach fun.

N.C. folk musician Doc Watson critical after fall

RALEIGH, N.C.  Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson is in critical but improving condition at a North Carolina hospital after undergoing colon surgery. Folklore Productions represents Watson and says he had the surgery Thursday night at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. A hospital spokeswoman said he remained in critical condition this morning.

VSO tackles 'monster' symphony

During a rehearsal this week at Chrysler Hall some 280 singers clomped up a steep riser, 10 rows deep, behind a Virginia Symphony Orchestra swollen to 120 players.
