Virginia Beach-reared Justin Kauflin strolled onto the stage for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition on Sunday with a grin on his face and his guide dog, Candy, at his side.
After settling in at the keyboards, and settling his black Labrador onto the floor beside him, he proceeded to play for a chance at $25,000 and a one-year record deal.

There are no mutton chops. No big gold sunglasses. No rhinestone-studded jumpsuit. And this Elvis couldn't carry a tune if it had a handle. But even though his black T-shirt and jeans are not the stuff of a Las Vegas show, Elvis Orr is the big attraction.
By Will Harris Correspondent Tony Mendes, one of the featured riders in this weekend's Professional Bull Riders Touring Pro Series at Hampton Coliseum, comes from a bull-riding bloodline. His father and grandfather both rode bulls, and his brother, Scott Mendes, was the 1997 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Champion.
We went into the judging with the idea that the winning images had to capture some part of the spirit of Hampton Roads and have a certain artistic elegance. It took hours to sort through the 1,500 images that entered but we eventually narrowed the field down to 13 finalists. We picked a top 3 winners and 10 honorable mentions.

Whew! What a busy summer it was.
Our Discover Hampton Roads Scavenger Hunt sent readers all over South Hampton Roads, exploring some of the region’s most-loved places.
Participants collected points along the way as they completed each of 13 challenges, which ranged from rolling down Mount Trashmore to searching through the Chrysler Museum for a work of art.
