Fish taco mania migrated across the Mexican border and into San Diego in 1983 when Ralph Rubio opened a restaurant and made fish in a shell his signature dish. Since then, the idea has been migrating east. Today South Hampton Roads is heavily populated with places serving up fish tacos. Readers nominated 61 restaurants.
For a precious few hours each week, patrons pack into Capt. Groovy's Grill & Raw Bar, 8101 Shore Drive, for the fish taco lunch special. In fact, on Wednesdays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., about 150 fish tacos fly out of the kitchen.

Mike Fetsch, 29, Norfolk Occupation Naval architect Nominated Gringo's Taqueria On fish tacos "I am a surfer, sailor, fisherman and general waterman. I know fish, and I know tacos... chicken, beef, shrimp, you name it. But fish are by far the finest filling for any tortilla shell. Fresh ingredients are the key, but really, it's fish in a tortilla shell. What's not to love?"
Gringo's Taqueria It's hotter than a habanera outside when we duck into Gringo's Taqueria, the first stop on our fish taco taste test.

Nominated Chicken Caesar salad from Romano's Macaroni Grill in Town Center
On Caesar salad "I like these salads because they have such a mixture of flavors between the Parmesan cheese, the way the chicken is prepared and the flavorful dressing."

HAIL SENOR CESAR CARDINI! He's the Italian-Mexican chef who gave the world Caesar salad. It all started in a Tijuana restaurant in 1924. Our Caesar salad taste test got started earlier this month as readers nominated nearly 50 restaurants for their Caesars, and 50 people applied to be testers.
Fellini's It should be spring. Instead, it's one of those schizophrenic days in May with bright sunshine blemished by intermittent rain. We duck into Fellini's, the first stop in our Caesar salad tour. A nice crisp Caesar salad - or four - will surely make this evening seem more springlike.
